Re: Homecoming! 1990 Kawasaki KB100 RTZ

I saw that the thread was active this year and I also thought that it wouldn't be a problem if I pinged here for help.

I am currently restoring my kb100 and almost at the end of the restoration, I have a crazy problem. My old carb won't give the necessary juices required for the engine to stay running, unless the choke is operational. If i let go off the choke, the engine shuts down. Tried with another carb (second hand) and the results seem to be same.

Ps: I haven't installed the air filter yet. help

Re: Homecoming! 1990 Kawasaki KB100 RTZ

Check these first -

1. Idle screw setting (warmed up engine idles at about 1,000 rpm)

2. Air screw setting (two and a half turn out or thereabouts?)

If these are OK, then may be a clogged jet? Check these

3. Both the jets - pilot and main (one of them has a rubber stopper kind of thingy, if I am right, and seats the jet)

And lastly,

4. Float (they were made of brass and there was a float valve to maintain the level of floats to regulate the amount of petrol in carb reservoir)

Don't try to race the engine without the air cleaner - as such KB100 has a side draft carb, and running the engine with the carb cover open is almost like not having the air filter on. Hope you have managed to get the PU foam element for the airfilter. Use 2T oil after cleaning the element for best results...

Re: Homecoming! 1990 Kawasaki KB100 RTZ

Yes jets do get clogged very often and its best to replace them with newer ones instead of trying to clean them.

Along with the main jet and the idling jet, do remove the emulsion tube (one which houses the needle pin and looks like a flute) and get it cleaned as well. A couple of shots of a carb & choke cleaner will help.

The sponge filter element can be used from the earlier Honda Activa scooters which had a similar one.

The KB125 had a Mikuni carburetor so I'm guessing the 100 also might have a similar one. Try finding a carburetor repair kit online.

Also make sure the intake is airtight (rubber elbow from air-box) and that the carburetor cover and areas nearby aren't sucking excess air.

Re: Homecoming! 1990 Kawasaki KB100 RTZ

Almost picked up a KB100 today, but held off. Bike was quite nicely re-done and maintained, but couple of issues like oil leak and a not-so-smooth 2nd gear. Papers would have needed some work - apart from renewal of registration. The main thing was the 2nd gear.

So the hunt continues .. :|

7 years of Team-BHP and 2 years of being a member, this is first thread I cherished a lot.

Absolutely loved it! My dad has one of these which our household loves the most. From the last few years, I have been meaning to surprise him by restoring the bike but I haven't found the motivation at all. Your thread is a catalyst.

Do you reckon I will be able to find the parts in Bangalore? I have a decent mechanic who does the annual service to ensure she is started for the Ayudha Pooja during Dusshera.

Need help in Procuring Spares for a Kawasaki KB100

Hello Everyone,

I am an owner of a 1990 Kawasaki KB100 which is currently undergoing a restoration project. During this restoration, we had to change a lot of parts, out of which one crucial part, the Reed Valve is missing. I have tried searching for it across my home city of Trivandrum, but so far have not received any information on where spares can be found, not even used or from older engines.

It would be extremely helpful to get contact of any seller who can sell spares for this rare bike. It is ok even if the seller is out of state, I am very much ok with paying the cost for sending the part to my city, my main aim is to just ensure that the bike is running. Spares become further important as I would be having this bike for an extremely long period of time in Rural TN, so would want to ensure that I have a source for parts in case anything goes wrong with the bike.

Thanking Bhpians in advance for the help.

Re: Homecoming! 1990 Kawasaki KB100 RTZ

The bike had started giving major issues and the tuning was erratic once again. was unable to get it serviced and tuned properly even after multiple tries. Finally, after a lot of tears let the bike go to my local mechanic in 2020. He has probably sold it to someone or maybe scrapped it. Just dont want to find out since it still hurts a lot.
Got myself a RE Interceptor orange crush in April 2019.

2000 km up, and a service too. They say the journey is the destination. I am there, experiencing it.

Thanks, @schakravarthy !

Re: Homecoming! 1990 Kawasaki KB100 RTZ

Congratulations Condor - wishes coming in too late I know, but still - better late than never. How is your KB100 doing?

I am trying to get some more information on the KB series bikes - especially the RTZ.
  • How was the KB100 different from the KB100 RTZ in terms of looks and specifications?
  • What year was the RTZ series launched in?
  • Was the RTZ also introduced in the KB125?

Based purely on memory.
The KB 100 was launched in 1988.
The KB 100 RTZ was launched in 1991. I acquired one, slightly used, in 1993 as my work commuter motorbike. I remember there were some slightly different decals and all. I cannot remember what the exact enhancements were, mechanically but I do remember the bike had solid 12 volt electricals, a white fuel filter behind the engine block and separate 2Toil tank. It had an alternator. And the KB had a longer wheelbase than its contemporaries which contributed to its better stability.
At a later stage, around the end of the 1990’s, 1998-1999 or so, when all these 100 cc bikes were well entrenched in India, Yamaha launched the RX135 and Kawasaki launched the KB125.
