Kawasaki sells just a handful of Versys-X 300s

https://www.cartoq.com/kawasaki-vers...d-heres-proof/

"In all of 6 months, Kawasaki has sold only 2 units of the Versys. In contrast, the Versys 650, a much pricier motorcycle, sold 21 units in April 2018. The motorcycle’s steep price tag of Rs. 4.6 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi, means that it’s almost as pricey as its 650cc elder sibling, the Kawasaki Ninja 650N.

"Kawasaki has priced the Versys X300 so high despite assembling it in India through the completely knocked down (CKD) kit route.

"The high price tag by Kawasaki is intentional. The Japanese motorcycle brand is trying to keep its premium appeal intact, and not dilute it with lower priced models."

Then I guess I was the lucky few to see one on the Road in Mumbai while coming back home from my work one day.

Wrong information. Cartoq is probably just recycling articles without properly verifying information. Their source inspiration is mostly this article

Qouting my earlier post on the topic -

They sold one more unit in March 2018. So the figure should be five now - defenitely not two.

That said - still a flop for sure. Kudos to the management who decided to push the price up by almost a lakh by including mandatory accessories in the ex-showroom price.

I have a feeling they are waiting for the pricing of the BMW GS310 before deciding to take the accessories off the X300 and reduce its price.

Heard they've delivered one at Kochi Showroom too. Told me the client specifically wanted the X300.

Even if the Price was lower, with looks so uninspiring, a model which is supposed to be inspirational is destined to be a flop

(Other similar notable mentions: INAZUMA, MOJO)

Looks aren't everything, TBH. The Versys 300 is undoubtedly a fantastic bike, but it's simply not worth that kind of money in comparison to - well, pretty much any other bike available between 2 and 5 lacs. If it was priced closer to the KTM 390s it would be serious competition.

tl;dr why would you pay ~800cc price range money for a 300cc bike? Would you buy a Maruti (even a very good Maruti) if it cost the same as a Mercedes?

The Indian X300 is such a frustrating product! The motorcycle is brilliant. Looks good for a dual sport/tourer and has Japanese reliability. However, that pricing seems like it was intentionally designed to keep us away from the bike.

I think Kawasaki management thought that this motorcycle only appeals to a handful of people, who won't be deterred by pricing and is thus milking them for ever single penny. Whatever the case, its just terrible policy from Kawasaki and it has made me loose interest in their entire Indian product portfolio.

Looks are not all that important in the adventure class, which is defined by function over form. Most adventure tourers (from Himalayan to even the big continent munching ones like the GS 1200s and the KTM 1290s) look downright ugly to most people.

And it doesn't matter.

What the X300 is - is purposeful. It perfectly bridged the gap between the Himalayan and the Versys 650, if not for the stupid price tag.

Now comes the chance for the GS 310.

It's definitely the price. I won't be surprised if Bajaj launches a similar bike at half the price.

A Well deserved failure!
At a price so horrific, it would have been befitting, if they would have registered 0 (zero) sales.

Classic case of bad pricing, it is a decent bike but price has to be within 3-3.5 lakhs OTR, beyond which it does not makes sense for a 300 cc bike. These are the small bikes that really make sense for Indian cities, i would personally love to own one of these for my daily commute. Supremely comfortable and capable for the rough roads that needs to be tackled day in day out.

Not happening for a CKD in the current taxation framework. Some other prices below -

Yamaha R3 BS4 - 3.48L ex showroom.
Ninja 300 - 3.60L ex showroom.

Versys X300 is currently priced at 4.69L including accessories. I've calculated the international price of the accessories earlier and it comes close to a lakh (Yes! Atrocious when converting from dollar rates).

I feel they can and should reduce the price to around 3.8L - 4L ex- showroom without accessories, based on how BMW goes about with their GS 310 pricing. It should move some units at that price since there is niche demand for both R3 and N300 still, and the adventure class is picking up some interest recently. 20k - 40k premium over a similar engine config sport bike sounds decent for the adventure version.

BMW has it much easier due to local production by TVS, but I doubt they will go for much higher margins to suppress volumes and maintain the premium stature.
