Classic Legends reveals Jawa's 293cc, single-cylinder engine

Classic Legends, a subsidiary of Mahindra has revealed the engine that will power the soon to be launched Jawa motorcycles in India.

Jawa motorcycles will be powered by a 293cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, DOHC engine. The engine is built on a BS-VI ready platform and produces 27 BHP and 28 Nm of torque. It is claimed to have a flat torque curve.

The new engine was developed in Varese, Italy. It boasts a classic look featuring the JAWA logo on the cam cover, while the crankcase is finished in chrome. Much like the classic bike, the new model will have twin exhausts, that have been tuned to replicate the tone of a classic 2-stroke engine.

Earlier this year, Anand Mahindra had confirmed the return of the Jawa brand to India. The bikes are likely to feature a retro look and would compete with Royal Enfield in the Indian market.

Re: Classic Legends reveals Jawa's 293cc, single-cylinder engine

Its a big "welcome back" to the Jawa brand, that has been great in its prime years. Prospective customers will however have high hopes and expectations from brand Jawa.

Hopefully, the engine is well researched and has undergone the gruelling tests to withstand the unpredictable and arduous Indian road and traffic conditions.

Most of the indigenous engines and bodies have been tested on gullible customers in India as guniea pigs and the feedbacks obtained by the company have been duly utilised/ not utilised to upgrade and improve upon the original.

Enough reason, why many buyers look for tried and tested machines of international brands.

Only time will prove my above averments right or wrong !

Thanks mate for these pictures

If this is indeed the direction of new avatar of Jawa - indeed I would term it as "Return of the Jedi".

Seems to have taken a leaf out of the British (Triumph- Bonneville/Classic Range) and gone the extra mile to retain the classic look.

Now they seem to have got the "motor" sorted out fairly well, hope similar sense prevails for the "cycle" as well.

Please bring it on Mahindra

Best Regards & Ride Safe

Twin exhausts:- One dummy, one working, or both working?
Same stylist who designed the 'twin exhausts'of the Mojo?

Can become a MM signature!

Regards
Sutripta

PS - yes, I know the Yezdi had working twin exhausts.

Beauty.

The stats claim its a liquid cooled engine, so the fins are obviously fake. But the execution is pretty neat and gives that old school charm.

Same goes for that twin exhaust.

Looks like a reworked version of the Mojo mill - so both should be working.

That is a liquid cooled engine?
The execution is very impressive and I expect great things from this bike. I can't wait to see the finished product and test ride it. Will Mahindra also find a way to put a 0 at the end of the product name? Maybe this will be called the Jawa 300 (Three-oh-oh)

This re-kindled my interest now in classic motorcyles. I hope this will be a complete product and not a half cooked attempt. If it is proved reliable and not like RE, then I am booking one after one year of its launch. I will be in India by then.

Thank you for sharing the pics.

Maan that is a beauty. They have tried to replicate as much as possible the old look of the Jawa 250 single. Identical look to the engine crank case cover and the carburetor lid. If it can deliver more than it looks, it could very well bring back renewed interest for the brand.

Re: Classic Legends reveals Jawa's 293cc, single-cylinder engine

Until and unless the price of this is less than / equal to the Royal Enfield Classic 350, I don't see this new Jawa selling. Of course, old school motorcycle lovers will line-up to get their hands on this, for a test ride. But how many would put in their money to buy one?

Those engine pictures though, beautiful.
I can even use them as my cellphone wallpaper. So satisfying to look at.

Let's hope the new Jawa is a sensibly priced modern classic motorcycle.

That engine looks like a work of art!

But then I've seen Rudra create some wonderful pictures on his workstation. Hope the real version we will get for our Rupees will have a finish that is mostly similar to this one.

Hope it's not a tease.

That motor does look classic Jawa/Yezdi.

But will it sound anything like the Jawa/Yezdi of yesteryears? The 'thump' is what Royal Enfield cashed in on with the newer line up is what I feel.

Re: Classic Legends reveals Jawa's 293cc, single-cylinder engine

The engine design is true to the original hope they come out with a twin cylinder with better power similar to RE Interceptor soon. Wonder how the exhaust note will sound as this is a 4-stroke engine this is something I am keen to check out.

Well said . The Jawa will have to sell on product strengths, and not just nostalgia because the current generation of youngsters (and a decade older) either don't know what Jawa is, or couldn't care less.

Jawa fans are too old or getting old or already dead.

As you said, it will have to be a competent motorcycle with a good price tag, Jawa badge notwithstanding. It can't get away with compromises in the way many Royal Enfield models do.

Beautiful looking engine. Can't wait to see the retro looking motorcycle that will run with this heart.

Good start by Mahindra. Looking forward to see more action !!

The numbers are quite impressive if I compare it to 350 Enfields. Hope it performs as good as it looks. Much excited.
