Re: My Racing Red TVS Apache RR310

Great Review! I have a soft corner for this bike as I owned Apache 160 FI few years back. Even that was very tractable. The bike looks splendid especially in real. 100 marks on picking up the red instead of black - changes the whole perception of the bike!

I just have one grouse with the photos, I don’t see any riding gear on you in any of the photos. Hope you have the complete gear and all the photos were taken in the city. Ride safe! Wish you a lot of miles on this revv-happy Pony!

Talking about riding gear argument, why should one not have to wear it inside the city? May be not to look awkward or because one is too lazy to wear it and remove it within short stints of riding?
You get hurt even if you fall at 30 kmph inside city traffic.
IMO it's going too far in pushing someone to wear riding gear. All I care is a decent helmet, and sane riding behaviour. But that's just me. If I am insisting someone to wear gear, I would also ask him to have it during city runs too

Really crisp and detailed review of the bike. Congrats on the purchase. Bike looks neat in RED! It does match up with size of bikes higher than its segment - no doubt!

Btw, how are the lights holding up? Bi-LED setup looks cool. How is it fairing on the highway and during rainy season?

One good thing is you removed the ugly looking tyre hugger. It was definitely an eye-sore.

On the other hand, TVS could’ve come up with a lot better design elements to the alloys as the one on the bike is a bit too thick for my liking

Rest everything looks absolutely fantastic on the bike.

Safe riding and keep munching on miles on this beauty.

Thank you! I was initially confused between the colours as matte finish factory paints are quite few currently, although they are becoming common with the each passing day. The confusion was cleared when I saw both the colours in person once the display bikes arrived at the showroom. The fact that the matte finish looked too dull, would hamper the bike's visibility at night and that I wouldn't be able to clean/polish/get it detailed as easy as a glossy paintjob made it a bit more difficult to consider this shade. Add to it that her curves were more visible and that it looked like a mini Ducati in red sealed the choice of colour for me.

For city commutes, I always wear a helmet whenever I'm on the bike. For sunday breakfast rides et all, I am always fully geared from head to toe. In fact, I've begun using them even when I take the bike to the SVC, which is about 30-35 km's away from my residence. Most of the photos have been taken in the city itself and I don't prefer riding gear locally as it becomes too hot. You can see one such image below where my t-shirt is dripping of sweat without the jacket itself (two different shades of grey on the t-shirt near my arms). I dread to imagine what would be the case if I begin to wear all the gears inside the city limits. That said, I will share a photo of myself fully geared when I go for a long ride next time.

Thank you so much! I took some time to get used to the LED headlights and at first, was under the impression that they are almost useless. It was only with time that I realized how good their throw is. One might not notice it if you're inside a city (where it has a fairly wide throw) which is bustling with activity, but take it on a road that is pitch dark and it is at such times when you realize how powerful these Bi-LED's are.

True, if they were designing the bike from scratch, I'm quite confident that they would've had a better design for the alloys. Sadly though, this is one of the parts that have been shared under the TVS-BMW alliance and hence we get the same alloy wheels that are used in the G310R as well as the G310 GS.

Congratulations on the acquisition of the beast. Its a head turner for sure. I happened to be in a cab when this bike pulled over to my left and I could not take my eyes off!. Rightly as one esteemed member pointed out, the pics dont do justice to the sheer size of this beast.

Also, you mentioned a few points about the instrument cluster. I did not see any pic of the fully lit console. If I have missed it, my apologies. Can you please share a couple of pictures of the cluster both by day and night?

Happy Riding and wishing you a lot more miles to crunch.

Thank you. I can understand that feeling. I myself happen to stare at other RR310's if I happen to see them at a signal or in traffic even though I own one myself.

Apologies, actually I was the one who missed out on sharing images of the display. I kept forgetting to take the photos hence the delay in replying. I finally managed to take them today. Here they are:

Re: My Racing Red TVS Apache RR310

I was having the vibration issue whenever it comes to 90-100 kmph on my Apache RTR 160. But could not find a solution to it during my ownership of 9 years.
Anyways I have sold it off about 2 months back.
Can you throw some light on ways to get to rid of it. Might be useful in case I own a new one to my family.

If you mean getting rid of vibrations, there isn't much that can be done. If you're considering the RR310, do ask the guys at the showroom/ASC to get the new bar-end weights installed. These new units will significantly reduce vibrations on the handle-bar as i've personally experienced on my bike.

Re: My Racing Red TVS Apache RR310

Update:
I got a tail-tidy installed on the bike recently. It gives a clean and sleeker look to the rear profile of the motorcycle. Got it installed from the guys at D3ath Starz Customs. They are yet to share the costing of the same since mine was the first one they did, essentially a prototype. It is probably going to be under the 1k mark and is more affordable than most brands that charge nothing less than 2k for a universal tail tidy. I've shared a link to their FB page in case anyone is interested in the same.

P.S. I am not associated with the said company in any way. I've shared it for the benefit of fellow RR310 owners and the mods may remove the link if they find it inappropriate.

Attaching images of the RR310 tail tidy:

My Racing Red TVS Apache RR310-tvs-apache-rr310-tail-tidy-1.jpg

Here is the new panel, made from scratch. Ignore the rough edges since it is just a prototype.

Doesn't she look sexy sans the tail section at all!

My Racing Red TVS Apache RR310-tvs-apache-rr310-tail-tidy-2.jpg

I had put a temporary number plate sticker below the tail section to avoid a chance of any issues with the cops.

A slightly lower perspective of the tail section. The stock indicators have been retained while the number plate light was not needed as it will be illuminated with the help of the brake light.

Re: My Racing Red TVS Apache RR310

Quoting myself from another thread since it is related to the visit for the 3rd service:

Quote:
As per my knowledge, TVS has been silently been rolling out these updates since January 2019, but it was officially conveyed to all owners via message only recently. In fact, the same can be seen in the first image of my RR310 tail-tidy update in my ownership report. Regarding the update, I recently went for the 3rd service of my RR310 earlier this week and got all the updates done on my bike including the windscreen cushion pad, chain roller and the ECU update.
Although I've barely had a chance to ride the bike post the updates, the 35 km ride from the SVC to home gave me a rough idea that the bike vibrates lesser than earlier and the chain noise, which I could hear only on speed-breakers or potholes, has now completely vanished. Many RR310 owners do believe that there is a difference in the pick-up, fuel efficiency and the top speed of the bike post this ECU update although the service engineer has clarified that this update is only done to eliminate the stalling issue that some people, including me, were facing. I'll need to ride the bike at least for one more week before I can comment whether the ECU update has actually made a difference to the problem of the bike stalling often.
There was also a rumour shared by a few blogs/online publications that there is an update for the seat as well. I asked the engineer at the SVC who told me that the problem is exclusively limited to the first lot owners where the seat material of the pillion seat starts to tear off (for the lack of a better word) and TVS plans to replace it for them only. No one in my circles seems to have been affected due to this issue although there are a considerable number of first batch bikes.

Another issue we RR310 customers (at least in Mumbai) are facing is the shortage of these updated parts. I had placed an order for the windshield cushion visor almost two months ago after I saw it on a friend's bike in January, when I had gone to get the heavier bar-end weights installed. I was constantly in touch with the engineer from the SVC, who is a part of the 310 owners Whatsapp group, but there was no update till the first week of March. I got fed up and sent a mail to the customer care mail id of TVS Motor Company. Surprisingly, I got a call from the SVC in less than 48 hours, confirming that they now have all the required parts in stock. No stock for 2 months and suddenly you have stock in 2 days, something seems amiss right, TVS Motor Company?
Initially, I got a call from one of the service advisors, whose voice seemed to be pretty tensed as he was likely under pressure from the SVC or from TVS themselves. I had to calm him down a bit before keeping the call, and I told him I knew the mistake was on the company's part and not his, hence he doesn't have any reason to worry. Later in the day, I received a call from Mr. Arun, the head of the after-sales/service department who patiently listened to my concerns before telling me the same thing that all the parts in question were now available and I could come and get it installed the next day itself. Since my 3rd service was barely 10 days away, I told him I would be coming only then to install these parts as well.
So I visited the SVC last Monday for the 3rd service. My bike had completed a year on the same day although I had barely managed to do 6,000 km's in a year's time. I had a few small issues which the SA wrote down quickly and said they would be duly attended to. One important issue I am facing is the fading of a sticker on the panel which is on the right side of the pillion seat that reads "35 Years Of TVS Racing". This sticker is the only one which has faded in the past few months while the rest of them are as good as new. The SA said he has raised the concern under warranty will get back to me in approximately 10 days.

The sticker in question that has begun fading:
My Racing Red TVS Apache RR310-tvs-apache-rr310-sticker-fading-rhs.jpg

Similar sticker on the left side which is as good as new:
My Racing Red TVS Apache RR310-tvs-apache-rr310-sticker-lhs.jpg

The service of the bike was a smooth affair, the engineer began by changing the parts which were under the 'performance upgrade' as shared by TVS in a text message, followed by changing of the engine oil and oil filter. The air filter too was changed this time as suggested in the manual although the brake oil wasn't changed as the engineer said it was as good as new (I am as surprised as anyone else). This was followed by checking various other parameters and the crucial ECU update to iron out the stalling issue. Following the chain clean and lube process, the bike was sent for a wash and ready to run free for the next 6 months (until the next service). The total bill came to INR 1,660 wherein they had included the cost of the windshield cushion visor (INR 39 +18% GST) which was supposed to be given free of cost. I had to bring it to their attention and get the final amount corrected, which then came to INR 1,610. This final amount was corrected with a pen below the bill, which seems quite silly. Sharing a scan of the bill below:

Re: My Racing Red TVS Apache RR310

Another RR310 owner had tagged along with me since he needed to update his ECU and the Thane SVC does not have a tablet device (tab) for the same. This reminds me of another issue that TVS Motor Company needs to solve at the earliest, this one being a regular SVC servicing the 310 (which is technically, unauthorized). As most people reading about the RR310 know, TVS has select dealerships that have been given rights to undertake sales and service for the Apache RR310 as it is one of their most premium products till date. In and around the Mumbai region, only 3 dealers including Priyanka TVS (Panvel), Hare Krishna TVS (Malad) and Supreme TVS (Ulhasnagar) have been given these rights. The Ulhasnagar dealer also happens to have a SVC in Thane (Wagle Estate) which has been servicing quite a few RR310's although they haven't been authorized to do so at the said location. While I can understand that a few RR310 customers may be taking their bikes here for servicing since they find Ulhasnagar a bit far, I would like to bring to light the horrible service they provide and I've had two fellow RR310 owners facing issues here. While one owner was told they lost the keys of his motorcycle during the service (only to replace the entire lock set later), another owner had a screw on the fairing tightened a bit too much which resulted in the screw breaking while the bike was in motion.
These two friends also had issues during their recent service in the last one month which I will explain below in two separate paragraphs (based on the bike colour):

Red RR310:
A friend owing a red coloured RR310 wanted to replace the bar-end weights with heavier units after receiving the performance upgrades message from TVS. This unauthorized SVC for the RR310 in Thane began demanding INR 400 as cost for the new bar-end weights citing the fact that they had not received any communication from TVS that the part was being given to owners free of cost. I advised my friend to write a mail to TVS and he did. The following week, he received a call from someone working in the SVC known as Mr. Mukesh, asking why he had lodged a complaint against them. He first told my friend to take the complaint back and that he would arrange for the bar-end weights and other free parts in 10 days. I told my friend not to take the complaint back until he gets all the parts fitted by the SVC free of cost. A few days later, the parts did indeed arrive and they were installed free of cost, following which I asked my friend to write a mail reporting that he was now satisfied with the service. The SVC also undertook the second free service but did not update the software as they did not have the tab for the same, and suggested my friend to go to Ulhasnagar just to update the ECU. The next day, this friend finds out that is coolant level is below the minimum level mark and calls the service center to inform them of the issue. The SVC replies that they don't have any coolant in stock (and neither did they bother to check the coolant level during the service) and hence are helpless. Following these issues, I asked my friend to get his bike to the Panvel SVC so that we can top-up the coolant and get the software updated at the same time.

Black RR310:
Another friend was also a regular at this service centre, as he used to visit them right from the time of the first service. He had recently given his bike for the third free service here and they had promised to do all the work except for the software update, which again, would have to be done at Ulhasnagar, their main SVC and not at the sub-outlet located here in Thane. This friend was facing some issue related to the pick-up of the bike and his ECU update was due as well, and hence I asked him to come to Panvel to solve both the issues and get all the performance parts installed at the same time.
This friend was unable to join me on Monday due to personal reasons and hence reached the Panvel SVC the next day. The engineer for the 310 said that the previous SVC has duped them by using DOT3 brake oil instead of DOT4 while charging for the latter. There was an issue with the clutch assembly due to which this friend was facing a problem with the pick-up of the bike, which took two days to fix. The engineer at Panvel also told my friend that a washer (IIRC) or some other critical component that is supposed to lock the rear set of brake pads in place, was missing and could have resulted in the brake pads not working or even worse, moving out of position and endangering the life of the rider.

While the Panvel SVC installed the windscreen cushion visor and the bar-end weights, they could not install the new chain roller as they had no stock of the same. I called up the head of the service department, Mr Arun, who said that there was some confusion regarding the chain rollers and hence they don't have one in stock for my friend, even though I had asked for 3 units of the chain roller almost 2 weeks in advance. He had promised me that they would be available for all three bikes, and instead of using two on Monday (on my bike as well as the other red RR310) we used only one (on my bike), since the other red RR310 had already received the new chain roller. This effectively meant that there were still two extra chain rollers out of which they couldn't manage to keep one unit aside. Finally, even after keeping the bike from for 3 whole days in the SVC, they were unable to source a single chain roller for this bike and my friend had to return without the updated chain roller. Kudos to you, TVS for acting fast on the mail, but trust me; you could have followed up better.

Re: My Racing Red TVS Apache RR310

So here's a few updates about the bike in the last month since the 3rd free service:

The rim tapes that I had ordered from Ali-Express finally arrived, about a month after they were ordered. Neatly packed, they were a breeze to install, save for a few negligible mis-alignments due to my DIY technique. The fact that they were dirt cheap (approximately INR 80) was the icing on the cake. They are reflective, and do make a considerable difference in the visibility as well as in the overall looks of the bike. Attaching a few images below. Meanwhile, it's been almost two months but Ali-Express has failed to deliver the tank-pad which was ordered at the same time as the rim tapes. This proves that the site remains to be a gamble, at least in my opinion.

My Racing Red TVS Apache RR310-tvs-apache-rr310-rim-tapes.jpeg
My Racing Red TVS Apache RR310-tvs-apache-rr310-upvan.jpeg

The panel with the defective '35 years of TVS Racing' sticker, which was ordered during the 3rd service finally arrived after 1.5 months of constant follow-ups with one of the service advisors and a little interaction with the Head of After Sales (Priyanka TVS) as the part took longer than usual to arrive. Coming to the point here, the part change was done free of cost as I had claimed warranty and it took about an hour to get the job done. The engineer asked me if there was any other issue I am facing that needs to be looked into. I told him there is no problem, just that one of the screws (I assumed) near the oil filter wasn't screwed back properly. I asked him to fix that which he did in about 5-10 minutes. It was a bit surprising that he missed out something like this during the last service. I too noticed it when I was cleaning the bike one fine Sunday. I didn't care about it much as long as I faced another similar issue yet again. Speaking of which, this time, while putting the tail section panel back, he (the service engineer) might have misjudged the alignment and this resulted in some plastic part protruding from under the tail section. While it shouldn't be a problem as such technically, it has triggered my OCD real bad. I messaged him the next day and he asked me to bring it over to get it fixed properly. What these folks don't understand is the fact that for such small issues that they don't pay attention to, I have to travel all the way to Panvel and back, which is a 70 km's round trip. I wouldn't entirely blame the service engineer though, he's always been a sincere guy but seemed loaded with work that day. Killing time at the SVC was a pain as the AC located in the customer lounge wasn't working well. I was hoping it would be fine during this visit as they had promised to get it fixed when I had gone for my 3rd service back in March and it was defunct even then. C'mon TVS, small things that can make a considerable difference, specially given the heat these days.

The panel with the faded sticker replaced with a new unit:
My Racing Red TVS Apache RR310-tvs-apache-rr310-panel-replacement-under-warranty-1.jpeg

The improperly fitted panel near the oil filter chamber which was rectified during this visit:
My Racing Red TVS Apache RR310-tvs-apache-rr310-flimsy-quality-plastic.jpeg

The protruding panel/part (seen below the red coloured under-body, covered in dust):
My Racing Red TVS Apache RR310-tvs-apache-rr310-panel-replacement-under-warranty-2.jpeg

After getting the new panel fixed on the bike, it was time for another coat of ceramic coating, or curing/re-validation of ceramic coating as they call it. I asked the folks at Maxshine how much they would charge me for coating the new panel, to which they responded that the price would be negligible. I was kinda relieved that they wouldn't charge much and asked them to take as much time as they'd like to get the job done. Pritish, who was at the shop then, said that instead of giving it to me the same evening (I had dropped off the bike around 10 AM), he could give it to me the next day in the morning. Upon reaching reaching the next day, Pritish wasn't at the shop so I happened to ask his sub-ordinate regarding how much I need to pay for coating of the new panel. He had a word with Pritish on call and said it came to INR 2,000! I was shocked since they had charged me INR 8,000 for the whole bike! I waited for Pritish to come and after having a word with him, he reduced the amount to INR 1,500. I didn't want to make an issue since it wasn't worth it. I paid the amount and left, but not before taking a few photos. I was happy with the work, no doubt, but this charging a bit high for one panel episode left a bad taste in my mouth. Here are the images post the curing process: FYI, the panel itself costs around INR 950.
