Mahindra considering electric 2-wheelers for India

According to a media report, Mahindra is evaluating electric 2-wheelers for India. These could be developed specifically for the Indian market and are likely to be manufactured locally.

While Mahindra has been among the first brands to launch an electric vehicle in India, the company is yet to makes its foray into the electric 2-wheeler segment.

Mahindra does offer an electric scooter called the Genze 2.0 in the US. The same scooter has been spotted testing in India as well. However, reports suggest that since the Genze was developed for the US market, it costs more than double that of the Ather 340, which makes it unfeasible for India.

The Genze 2.0 is powered by a 1.6 kWh lithium-ion battery that has a maximum range of 48 km. It has a claimed top speed of 48 km/h.

Right move from Mahindra in the vague of current developments. A realistic range of 50 Kms for a full charge with speeds up to 45-50 Kms and design matching to Genze 2.0 will be an excellent choice for city driving. Confidence in riding a home grown product will be better than riding a Chinese import.

Re: Mahindra considering electric 2-wheelers for India

So why is it costly, is it due to the fact that its getting manufactured in US or more due to R&D costs? If its R&D, won't volumes help? Its a bit puzzling how Ather as a startup can produce a product at half the cost with better range and also put up charging points - while a company like Mahindra which had Reva is still watching. Reasons cited in "Innovators dilemma" at play here or something else?

I am seeing so many announcements about entry of prominent manufacturers into the electric mobility space but not seeing any news or announcement of established business entities investing heavily into the charging infrastructure and making them visible to us to take benefits or enlighten us on the cost elements so that we start considering EV's seriously

Mahindra is the twitter champion. If they put half as much effort to actually building EVs as they put in to calling themselves 'EV pioneers'. I follow most of the EV outfits and can't help but cringe the social media announcements from Mahindra and the likes.

So as per my little birdie info from Mahindra, the localised version of Genze2.0 will be out by end of 2021. Currently the work is on reducing the price (we know how it is done) and increasing the mileage. Ather scooter is seen as the benchmark and Genze has to better it. Meanwhile we will be seeing all the e-versions of XUV’s & KUV rolling.
