Rumour: Royal Enfield could discontinue 500cc models post BS6

According to a media report, Royal Enfield could discontinue its 500cc models when BS6 emission norms come into effect from April 2020.

Rumour: Royal Enfield could discontinue 500cc models post BS6-gallery5.jpg

It is believed that upgrading the existing 500cc engine to meet BS6 emissions norms may not be viable due to the high cost and low volumes.

The 350cc engine, which accounts for majority of the sales is likely to be replaced with a new engine. The new motor would comply with the stricter emission regulations.

Royal Enfield has not confirmed these reports. However, the company is said to be well on track to migrate to the BS6 norms as mandated by the government.

Makes sense! The RE 500cc range has experienced a massive sales drop ever since they launched the 650 twins.

With the excellent pricing of the 650 range, and hopefully a better performing 350cc once it is redesigned to cope up with BS6 norms - 500 really won't be missed, except by hardcore 'thump' fans.

As it is the 500 never sold as many numbers as the 350. People wanted the bullet. They wanted the thump. And they wanted it in the minimum possible money. So the 350 it was.
Now this is the majority I'm talking about.

Plus I've also come to know that they might be launching a Std 650 in the near future. They might name it something else but with ergonomics like the Std it would be winner for sure. I'd buy one right away. The Ergos of the current 650 is what is keeping me away.

This is very bad news for people like me. I have some unique requirements.
1. I want a vibrating massage chair
2. This massage chair should also be able to vibrate my palms and the soles of my feet. In fact I need to feel vibrations in my soul as well.
3. The said chair should move from place to place since I'm not the kind of guy who likes indoor massages. The scenery needs to change constantly.
4. I need to feel gusts of wind all around me.
5. I like mechanical noises

What is going to happen of people like me. I'm so depressed I might need therapy.

can one hope against hope then that the thunderbird will be launched with a 650? the test mules spied so far do not sport the 650 engine so one can safely assume that they are all 350s

I really do hope they do come out with a thunderbird 650. Have always thought the thunderbird was the best looking 'RE, even better than the Interceptor. With the ergonomics of the thunderbird and the engine of the interceptor it would make one sweet package. Come on 'RE don't let us down !

If this news comes out to be true then it is truly an end of an era for the legendary RE 500cc big single. For many years this was the only big single widely available in India with that old school pushrod motor.

Given that it wont cut it for upcoming BS6 norms coupled with dwindling sales of the 500cc models, it was imperative that RE axed the 500cc pushrod.

It will be missed by people like me who have owned both the 500cc CI and 500cc UCE. The TORQUE delivery of a big single will be missed.
