Re: Rumour: Himalayan 250 in the making A motorcycle engine is the heaviest single part of any motorcycle and Royal Enfield engines have a dismal power to weight ratio.
Making lightweight motorcycles is a great move for men and women alike.
RE has had the wherewithal to do this for decades. Mahindra has done it with their 300cc engine that powers the Mojo and Jawa range.
RE chose to develop bikes like the Himalayan and the 650 twins, which could and should have been made with lighter and more efficient engines in the first place.
They have not done this however, their engines are super heavy and yet are touted as modern developments. In this time and age where efficiency and environment are paramount, this simply does not ring true.
Sure, the 650 twins have an engine that is a revelation and I personally believe with these twins, RE has finally arrived as a motorcycle manufacturer in the world stage. They have missed the bus however with the weight and size of the engines in the twins.
The Himalayan engine is what I'd call a hit and miss. Putting aside it's gremlins, it is simply too heavy, unrefined, underpowered and well, agricultural.
If there is now a push toward developing lighter motorcycles, I do hope that RE develops new engines from the ground up, instead of simply miniaturizing their ungainly, inefficient behemoths. This will hold the company in good stead and make it more future-ready. They could do this in-house or simply buy the technology or for that matter, an engine or even a motorcycle manufacturer itself.
