Restoring a Royal Enfield Mini-Bullet with a 200cc Crusader engine

We all have some things in life such that we can not get out of our head howsoever hard we might try. One such memory for me is an Enfield Crusader 200, which I rode pillion during my childhood.

During a morning walk in February, 2020, I sighted a junk that looked like the one I have been craving forever. Mustered courage and rang the door bell of a house, only to be told that it belonged to another family living across the street. Got in touch and came out victorious.

Signed the paperwork, that consists of only a transfer deed and some identification proofs and a declaration and indemnity bond.

Have a look at the current condition of the bike.

I have tried all bike repair shops in Gurgaon that proclaim to specialise in vintage bikes, but everybody declined to work on this bike due to lack of spares.

Congrats on the acquisition. The 200cc two stroke from the RE stable is indeed a rarity on the road. From what i can see, you are missing the carb (and accessories), the kick pedal and meter cluster. The bike looks mostly intact in spite of years of neglect. Generally , for motorcycle restorations, you need to take her to a specialist who knows the motorcycle and has worked on similar bikes. Not all garages would accept a bike like this. Ton of work and lot of possibilities of going wrong. Probably, members from Delhi / Gurgaon region can help you.

You can also get down and dirty and try to bring her back to life yourself. The most satisfying of all biking experiences.

Feeling great to see the mini bullet. This not so popular RE was the first bike I ever drove and is special to me. Waiting for more around the restoration story

I believe the most critical parts would be engine and gearbox: doesn't rust affect these?

Re: Restoring a Royal Enfield Mini-Bullet with a 200cc Crusader engine

I had requested the owner to get me the papers, with atleast the RC of the bike so that I could take possession and start of rebuild.

Nothing so far. I met his son a few days back, requested him to help me getting papers. He has yet to get back.

Will start the project as soon as I have the papers. Will update accordingly.

I have a similar memory from my childhood.
My father owned a 1974 Royal Enfield Crusader.
It had the following features:-
  • Headlight nacelle like a Bullet but smaller in size and sans the tiger lamps
  • 175cc single cylinder 2 stroke (UCE) Villiers sourced engine
  • A 4 speed gearbox with Right Hand side gear shifter
  • Left side brake lever.
  • Villiers written on the clutch and magnet covers.
  • Triangular tool box with flower nuts and Crusader written on them.
  • Teardrop shaped petrol tank with chrome finish and Classic RE logo.
  • Single speedometer, no ampere meter and a rotary switch on the nacelle for light operation.
  • Choke lever on the handlebar
  • 6 Volt electricals
The pic which you have shared is quite strange. The chasis and metallic panels look like that of a Mini Bullet. However, the petrol tank looks like that of a Crusader.

Sharing few pics. Kindly correlate and update.

In case, the parts are OEM and some new rare model by RE, it's worth a restoration project. However, if original parts have been mixed and matched, it's not worth.

Hope you find this information of some use.
