Aprilia considering 300-400 cc bikes for Indian market

Aprilia has revealed that it is considering the introduction of 300-400 cc motorcycles in India. These products are likely to take at least 2-3 years to be readied for launch in the country. The details of these products have not been revealed.

At the launch of the Vespa Racing Sixties edition scooters, the company confirmed that it will not be venturing into the 125-150 cc motorcycle segment. It will instead consider entering the sub-400 cc which consists of bikes like the KTM 390 Duke, Adventure and RC390 and TVS Apache RR 310. The company claimed that the Indian market is more accepting of products in the 300-400 cc segment.

Aprilia had displayed the RS 150 and Tuono 150 motorbikes at the Auto Expo 2018. This lead to people believing that these bikes would be launched in the country. There were rumours that the launch would happen in February 2020 at the Auto Expo, but it did not take place. With this announcement, we can safely assume that the above mentioned bikes will not be coming to India.

For its new motorcycles, Aprilia could use the CKD route, which should help in keeping their prices low.

Hitting the right segment - Entry level enthusiasts' segment.

SR 150 did a good job in winning hearts if not the numbers.

If they price it like the Ninja 300 or the R3 and expect boom in sales then they're in for a surprise.

IMHO they should also consider 400 to 600 cc segment too. There aren't really much options available. The ones that we have are priced in the proximity of 700+ segment and just confusing the buyers.

And if they price it right then they can do what Dominar did to sub 3L segment. [ I know I'm dreaming ]

I can understand everything and they are going with the "right on target" strategy. But Aprilia's pricing won't be spot on and that is where R3 and N300 suffered. The RR310 and BMW G310 (initial days) had a decent price tag. Also, the Tuono 150 has an already ridiculous price tag (expected). People in that price range tend to prefer the R15 and always will. The words "considering" doesn't inspire the readers much as well.

Re: Aprilia considering 300-400 cc bikes for Indian market

I don't know if they should bother. Their 300cc offerings would probably be a high compression single cylinder engine very similar to the ktm duke. However ktm bikes are made here and Aprilia is thinking of a CKD option which will price them off the market. If Yamaha launches the new R3 the Aprilla will have a hard time justifying it's price when a faster but cheaper ktm option exists while a smoother twin cylinder Yamaha will probably share similar pricing given both will be CKD units. And when ktm launches the 490 twin cylinder bikes in 2-3 years time then goodbye Aprilia

Looking forward to this brave move by Aprilia.

The SR125 and150 surely carved a niche for themselves filling the void for performance scooter enthusiasts( which going by the sales figures are pretty low). However this one's a more established segment with other players like KTM/Bajaj, TVS and kawasaki already having a product in the segment. Hope Aprilia realises the Indian mass market is as much if not more about right pricing as it is about the product.(The domi400 would like to defer though, but Bajaj itself is the biggest culprit )

Re: Aprilia considering 300-400 cc bikes for Indian market

Does Aprilia have any 300 - 400 cc platforms today? These are very long term plans and Im sure that any development on this piece of news will be very slow. Aprilia should have just moved ahead with the RS150 and Tuono 150 for now while they firm up plans for the bigger platform. By then the 660 would have been released as well and Aprilia would have had a proper roadmap for motorcycle buyers to upgrade towards, RS / Tuono 150 - 400 - 660 - 1100.
