Hero-Gogoro partnership in India; to accelerate shift to EVs

Hero MotoCorp has announced a partnership with Gogoro, a battery-swapping platform for electric vehicles (EVs).

The partnership will allow the two companies to collaborate on electric vehicle development. The Indian two-wheeler company also announced that the partnership will result in a Hero MotoCorp branded, Powered by Gogoro Network vehicle in the market.

The partnership will also allow Gogoro to bring its battery-swapping platform to India. The Taiwan-based company is currently said to have 3.75 lakh riders and 2,000 battery-swapping stations. Gogoro also claims to manage 2.65 lakh daily battery swaps, with more than 174 million swaps recorded to date.

The Gogoro network is an open platform for battery-swapping and smart mobility services. The 'Powered by Gogoro Network' program offers its partners access to the brand's drivetrains, controllers, components and other systems. This allows its partners to introduce electric vehicles which will integrate Gogoro's battery swapping technology.

First Ather and now this, Hero is certainly in a hurry to electrify it's portfolio. Pretty surprising considering their overall product line still seems to be stuck in the 90s. The common man really trusts Hero brand, and the market is theirs for the taking if they are able to execute the EV strategy well.

Off topic, but they are going to get into trouble for showing the Indian map like this (J&K)

Yeah swappable batteries will be the future for 2-wheelers. With dedicated battery-change stations it should be as quick as a Petrol station stop!

If they are doing 2.65 lakh swaps a day as claimed, isn't the total number swaps too low ? (17.4 lakh total swaps /2.65 swaps per day = 6.5 days) What am I missing ? It can't be that the swaps drastically increased over few days !

Re: Hero-Gogoro partnership in India; to accelerate shift to EVs

I don't think swappable battery tech will be the future of 2 wheelers or for any other segments. It's too costly to scale. The funny thing is most of these traditional companies complained about the lack of charging network as a drawback for EV adoption but they are going to install battery swap stations? Battery swap stations are much costlier than charging points. Gogoro pricing for swapping in Taiwan is much higher and equal to our fuel costs.

I believe a charging point with a removable battery pack will be a better option to meet all needs. ex: Ola Etergo scooter.
