NITK designs an E-Bike for forest surveillance & commute

The Center for System Design at National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal has designed and developed an e-bike for exclusive use of Kudremukh Wildlife Division. The bike ‘VidhYug 4.0’ was developed in about three months and uses a BLDC motor powered by 2.0 kw, 72 volts, 33 AH lithium-ion battery. On full charge, it is capable of covering up to 75 km on rough terrain.

Coming to special features, front utility box can be used to keep all the work accessories of forest officials like walkie-talkie, books etc. Charging docks are provided to charge the walkie-talkie and mobile phones. The rear pannier box can be used to store additional accessories. There is also a provision to carry water and food into anti-poaching camps or watch-towers in deep forest areas.

Awesome, in one word.

Electric - helps reduce sounds. Should have good torque to get thru terrain. Storage space, Charging docs. And I Loved the detachable head lamp that can double up as a torch light.

Super. Our educational institutions should do more such things. This is what will slowly bring our institutes on par with the MITs and the Stanford's of the world.
The IITs are anyway there, but glad to see the NITs do these as well.

REC Surathkal and REC Trichy used to be the shining stars during our school days, it’s heartwarming to see that the bar have been further raised now. Coming to the bikes, fantastic to see the innovation in flesh and some nifty touches make it ideal for the location as well. The cherry on the top apart from the obvious technical brilliance is the detachable flash light which also doubles up as the headlight of the bike. Congratulations to the team which made it possible, brilliant
