Hero Honda aims to launch bikes in Rs 12,500-15,000 range

World’s largest two wheeler manufacturer Hero Honda is facing intense competition in the domestic market from rivals including Bajaj Auto.

The company has now announced their plans to build a motorcycle that will sell for Rs 12,500-15,000. The plan is to create a brand new segment in the Indian motorcycle market to generate more sales.

At the moment, the cheapest motorcycle product in India sells for around Rs. 30,000. Pawan Kant Munjal, the managing director of Hero Honda was quoted as saying to media personals: “We are evaluating the entire scenario and a possible $300-350 vehicle is on our radar. It is in the broad spectrum of our work. Although there is nothing on the drawing board yet, we are seriously looking at it.”

Hero Honda seems to be inspired by the Indian government’s Automotive Mission Plan which would provide the automakers some concessions.

The plan states: “Domestically, the focus should be on developing and selling appropriate products for the large population of the country. The products could include cost-effective small carriers, strong rugged vehicles for the rural market and $300-350 motorcycles.”

Hero Honda also launched their latest bike model named Splendor NXG

I think the title should read, "launch mopeds" in ...... When is this company going to learn? They seem to like the reverse gear when all companies are searching for a second overdrive to go faster foward. And yet another launch in the 100CC.......ohh my!!!!!!!!

I hope they dont face the axe like Yamaha.

wat is the logic for this move ??

as such bajay tried the same thing with the BYK which was in fact a bit more expensive than the price target hero honda has and it still failed.

later market research revealed that pp dont want such a puny looking bike anyways bcos,

1) if ur concern is budget , u might anyways buy a moped or a scooter
2) with finance options available ppl really dont want to be invesitng money in a puny bike that anyway wont be rugged enuf to carry around ur family and sucks in terms of image..
3) with FE figures of entry bikes itself touching 65-70, a puny bike at 15k is not going to give any further signficant benefits on this front. for e.g even a scooty/ a moped like tvs50 doesnt give a dramatically better mileage than the bikes....

net net, hero honda, really is lost on which segment they need to be focussing on.....anyway good thing that they are digging their own grave,..

For 12K - 15K we wont get bikes more then 35 cc. LOL. The 60 cc scoots are costlier. Is this a gimmick?

If this "bike" takes off, I will too. To some uninhabited climes. Imagine battling for road space with the Tata-ONEs and now add insult to injury with this.
In all probability this .. this .. "thing" can squeeze thru gaps where normal bikes cant. Wonders that should go for a car owner's scratch-free quest.

Oh! looks like their Hero Puch dreams have again woken up. I am sure they will make something of that sort. Not that Puch was bad. In fact when I was in school and it was launched it became a huge rage. The first "moped" that had a desirability factor. That two geared thing was a pocket rocket, awright.

Agree with theMag here. If this thing comes & is successful & coupled with the Tata 1-Lac car, it'll be hell on our roads. Can you guys imagine what'll happen to places like Mumbai & Banglaore? We are already suffering badly on the infrastructure front & the last thing we need right now is vehicles like these which can screw up the problem even further.

And shouldn't the Govt. rather than giving concessions for such kinds of things be developing the infrastructure to tackle the problem current and future?

What? How much does a TVS50 cost these days. More that 15K I would think.

Are we talking about Hero Cycles or Hero Honda.

No offense raghava ji but don't you think that the Ferrari, Lambo and S-class owners might be thinking the same about the Honda's and Skoda's running on our roads? Complaints about being cheap, underpowered, no safety features I understand but infra I don't. Why should I be deprived of owning a cheap motorcycle just because the current infra is not enough to support the expensive vehicles?

Oh btw, I don't think this project would ever take off not for product feasibility but for market reasons.
