Magnesium shortage could hamper global motorcycle production

While the global automotive industry is yet to overcome the worldwide chip shortage caused due to the Covid-19 pandemic, now, a new media report says that motorcycle production could be hampered because of the shortage of magnesium.

As per the report, more than 85% of magnesium comes from China. Due to the rising costs of coal, the country’s magnesium output has been slashed to around half its normal level this year. Consequently, the cost of the metal has increased considerably.

Magnesium is usually used in the production of high-performance motorcycles. However, it is also used as a component of aluminium alloys required to manufacture multiple parts such as frames, wheels, etc.

The report also tells us that even though the production of magnesium in China has started to pick up pace recently, the output is still far below the normal levels.

The shortage of magnesium could not only slow down the global motorcycle production but could also lead to a spike in the cost of the products. Apart from the motorcycle industry, it is expected to impact the automotive industry as well.

Re: Magnesium shortage could hamper global motorcycle production

This will further increase costs of production and resulting in hiking of prices. I find it astonishing and funny as it feels like almost 90% of the worlds requirement of any raw material is being produced in China.
