Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India has sold more two-wheelers than its former partner and current market rival Hero MotoCorp, in the month of September. According to the data available on the Vahan portal, Honda registered 2,69,733 units while Hero’s tally came up to only 2,36,253 units.



While segment-wise data has not yet been released, it is likely that strong scooter sales have propelled Honda to the number one spot on the sales charts. In April-August 2021, Honda sold 6,95,388 scooters; this year, the number has grown to 10,62,943, which is a YoY growth of 52.86%. In the same period, the Japanese manufacturer sold 7,58,157 motorcycles. The total scooter sales in April-August 2022 stood at 21,91,208 units. This means Honda has a market share of over 48% in the scooter segment.



Hero MotoCorp has been strong in motorcycle sales, retailing 20,73,580 units in the same period this year - a YoY growth of 23.53%. However, in scooter sales, the Indian manufacturer is lagging behind Honda by a big margin of 1,36,010 units.



While the September numbers favour Honda, the annual sales charts are led by Hero MotoCorp by a large margin. However, this upset could reveal the changing dynamics of the Japanese rivalry.

Are these numbers considering sales in our local market? I have seen numbers earlier where Honda has beaten Hero i think, but that was with Exports.

I roughly remember, Honda can export, whereas Hero cannot with Honda's engines in it.

It is in Hero's companies hands where the company will go. I feel they have squandered a few years after the split.
