Rumour: Yamaha R3 & MT-03 bookings open unofficially

Earlier this month, Yamaha showcased its range of big bikes in India. On display were models like the Yamaha R3, R7, R1M, MT-03, MT-07 and MT-09. This led to speculations that some of these might be launched in the market soon, especially those at the lower end of the price range.

Now, according to a media report, some dealerships have started accepting bookings for the Yamaha R3 and MT-03. The dealers are charging Rs 5,000-20,000 and it said that the bikes are likely to be launched in the next two months.

The Yamaha R3 is a fully-faired bike that will be positioned above the YZF R15. It is powered by a 321cc, liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine that makes 42 BHP and 29.5 Nm.

The MT-03 is the naked version of the R3. It uses the same 321cc engine and is expected to compete with the KTM Duke 390. The R3, on the other hand, will rival the KTM RC 390.

With KTM rc390 costing close to near 3.20 ex showroom, Yamaha should introduce a launch price of 3.75 to really pull the strings. Previous R3 with exact same engine was 3.5 ex showroom 4 years back. Launch with a killer tag and then move towards a consistent 3.99 ex showroom depending on the sales traction. Else it will continue to remain a sales flop.

That KTM 390 makes all these little twins a really tough sell. Great engines and gearboxes and packages all around but obviously you have to pay for the twin and the refinement, while the KTM ostensibly has better output numbers. And most people discerning enough to want that will probably pony up for a middleweight. The MT03 looks like a hoot all-rounder but Im sure it'll be priced significantly above the KTM. So the real question is how well or badly will they price the 700s because thats where the competition is interesting.

Irrespective of whatever the result is going to be with respect to the sales of this product, I am so grateful that Yamaha is making efforts to satisfy the needs of the enthusiasts. I am salivating for the delicious proposition, the MT-03 brings to the table. Looking forward for a sane price. Please! Yamaha Please! Price it correctly.

One of the Blue Square dealers in Bangalore said, MT-03 will not be here till December 2023. Is that true? Does anyone have information by when they will be in the showroom?

The R3 sold for 3.5 ex showroom last in 2019 when stocks were about exhausted. That was 4 years ago and the new R3 which was only BS4 compliant then now has to be both BS6 compliant as well as the OBD2 compliant which will further drive up the price. I think a sub 4 lakh price is simply not possible given this will be a CKD bike and not actually made here like the KTM or the Kawasaki Ninja 300.

Re: Rumour: Yamaha R3 & MT-03 bookings open unofficially

While Honda moved to Bigwing for all their premium bikes which resulted in better service and sales ,Yamaha doesn't have a dedicated outlet for these range of bikes instead they sell it through some of their select dealerships in major cities add to that a commoner will mistake the R3 for an R15 and MT-03 for an MT-15 simply because of similar colour schemes inspite of paying a premium. That being said the MT-09 is an awesome piece of machine better than obese z900 by miles but that will be priced at a premium in typical Yamaha fashion.
