2022 KTM 390 Adventure | Upgraded to adjustable rear suspension

Price from the MySpareMarket handle seems to be the same as SVC but is it KTM branded or similar spec to OEM?

Upgraded to Adjustable Rear Suspension for my 2022 KTM Adventure.

Whenever I have written a review about my bike or suggested it to someone, the only major niggle I have had with it is its really hard rear suspension. While it is big boon when you're zooming down the highway at 100 km/hr for hours at end, but when you're navigation Mumbai's moon crater like roads on a daily basis, your spine would like to have a tough conversation with you at night.

I use my KTM 390 Adv as my daily rider. That means I ride it to work on weekdays and hit the highway on the weekends. Thus upgrading to a KTM supplied adjustable rear suspension which is built to fit the exact same chassis was a no-brainer. What's even better? The price.

Moolah? Rs. 6,500 for the part
Who fits it? KTM SVC
Warranty? On the suspension - none. On the rest of the bike - unchanged.
Time taken? under 30 mins (while I got it done along with periodic service). It is plug'n'play
End result? The bike has a learnt a skill that it had never heard of - rebound. It finally understands how to push the ride back up from a pothole. No longer would you clench your spine moments before your front wheel hits a pothole. I am traveling on the same route to work and I can feel how the impact is much softer on my spine now. Will play around with softer settings over the weeks and understand the bike better.

The difference is night and day for me in city condition. The setting is currently in the middle (stock). Given it has the whole gamut from softest to hardest - there is nothing to lose as you can set it as per your requirement when you hit the road.

One thing to note, you cannot change the settings on the fly like the front adjustable ones which come with a clicker. You will have to get off the bike and change the setting use a screw driver. However, does not require the strength of a hulk an a special tool like the pre-load adjuster.

Roughly Rs. 7,000 to bring my bike further closer to perfection in my books? Absolutely worth it.

Thanks for the info buddy, it does make the bike bearable. Can you share the part number? I will get in touch with them to order for my bike.

Thanks,

The part number is JG122073. You can just ask for the rear adjustable suspension - there's only the one.

Forget to mention earlier, this part is also compatible with the ADV 250 models given the chassis is the same, per SVC.

Nice one. Any reason you did not upgrade the front suspension as well?

This is a fantastic update - thanks for sharing. Two questions please.

- Which SVC did this for you?
- Is is not possible to do this for the front as well or did you simply not opt for that. To my mind that would have been a big game changer as well.

Thank you.

I have pulled the plug on this, have placed the order for the adjustable rear suspension. Now the wait begins, expecting it sometime next week.

Cheers

I don't off-road much on real trails so never really had an issue with the front suspension. They are not too hard when using as a daily driver or touring on it. Plus cost of ~Rs. 23,000 doesn't make it a 'good-to-have' upgrade unless there's a real need for it. Rear suspension was a real-need and after multiple days of daily riding in the city I can concur confidently that ride is much less tiring now. No other reason to not upgrade the front.

Eagerly waiting to get this installed, will take it for a breakfast run over the weekend to confirm the behavior. I will stick to the default setting it comes with now.

Will tinker once i know more.

Cheers

Any idea if this adjustable suspension would fit in a Duke 390?

Given the ADV runs a different chassis, I don't think so. Your best and quickest bet would be to call up your closest SVC and check. At the end, they'll be the ones fitting it.

It'd fit. However, you'd then not be able to adjust the suspension as I found out When I placed order for the adjustable shock I thought I would get the new gen duke 390 unit and it should fit my bs3 duke as well. However, the parts guy at the Sanpada svc gave me a 390 adv adjustable suspension today saying this is what he ordered all along and that the new gen duke parts won't be available freely before like 4-5 months anyway. I said fine, will try it however they wouldn't be able to do it today and I was very impatient so brought back home and put it on myself. As it turns out the rebound adjustment screw is half hidden behind those curved(bottom) mounting slots on the swingarm- see second last picture. There's a no way a screw would rotate fully as is. Only option is to shave little material off which probably should be fine or get an adv swingarm or get a YSS now. If you look at the swingarm of the 390 adv this shock is meant for the mounting is much slimmer to make way for the screwdriver- see last picture.
I'd be taking it to the svc to probably return it. In case they won't, and chance are high, I'd be selling it off at some markdown to anyone wanting to save some cash.
Mine is a BS3 gen 1 duke, not sure about the 2nd gen bikes so do your own research please if you got one.
Time to lick some (mental) wounds now!

You are a legend!
You are the first person in the whole world to clarify that the adv 390 rear shock is not a direct fit on the Duke 390. Thank you.
The 2024 Duke 390's adjustable screw is also at the same place.
