Yamaha to transform India into a major export hub by 2030

Yamaha plans to transform its India operations into a major export hub by 2030. The bike maker’s manufacturing unit will not only serve the domestic market but will also produce premium motorcycles for markets in Europe, the United States and Japan.

According to Eishin Chihana, Chairman, Yamaha Motor India, the company has already commenced exports of the Ray ZR scooter to France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkiye, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Until now, exports were only focused on emerging markets in Africa, South America and the ASEAN region.

Yamaha plans to leverage the manufacturing capacity in India to produce smaller-capacity engines above 155cc. The larger-capacity models above 900cc will continue to be built in Japan.

Chihana also expressed the need to enhance the quality standards. “We still have many points to improve and some gaps need to be filled when it comes to shipments to countries like Japan and Europe which ask for high levels of precision,” he said.

Indonesia is currently Yamaha’s largest export hub. It serves more than 100 countries across the globe.

You're late to the party Yamaha, just like many Japanese companies. Instead of leveraging India's vast market and volumes, you lot prefer to manufacture in SE Asia. Now, you're suddenly concerned about upping India's quality, that too for exports in 2030. Let's be real, the Indonesian Aerox's quality isn't on par with similar-priced two-wheelers.

Sirji, Thanks for the insight, but others are already ahead of the game. You should focus on dominating the domestic market first, especially the lucrative 350cc classic segment, where Enfield has a monopoly. Relaunch a modern avatar of the iconic RD350 (huge brand recall) and start with that. Leave your export dreams for 2030 and focus on reviving your brand presence in India. The only big two wheeler player selling less two wheelers than Yamaha in India is Classic Legends, not great company, is it?

Leave exports in 2030 dreams, need to sort domestic market presence first. Even the much later entrant Suzuki has overtaken Yamaha. The only major two wheeler operations that sell less than them currently is Classic legends,, not great company to keep, is it?

Better late then never I guess. Big plans like this do take a long time to execute. I do see the prospect of a well priced and up-to-spec MT-07 interesting. What I do like is the fact the the 300cc+ segment is shaping up nicely. Triumph and Aprilia have lit a fire under the Japanese and Indian brands. Pretty sure there will be more Triumphs on the 400 platform (Tiger 400 when?). Them taking this market seriously will only benefit us consumers in the long run.
