Re: Yamaha YZF R3 Review | The almighty conundrum, solved

Hi Vmax. Since the engine is a high compression one, do you use higher octane petrol or regular? What are the accessories that you have installed. Pls update with source and cost, if possible. Thanks.

Hi Aseem, I use a 95 octane petrol always. Its either BP speed or IO XP95 or HP Power.

Have used regular petrol few times. Felt like the bike was ill, although it operated ok at low speeds.
When you wring the throttle open, its response is jerky and the engine acts clunky. Overall a clumsy experience to use normal petrol for speeds above 80 or any gear above 6000 rpm....

So far, no Accessories at all. Planning to get endurance windscreen from Kerala. Its about 3000 and cheaper than Yamaha official one which is 5k i think. Also planning to install R6 throttle tube. Whenever these 2 happen, I'll update the thread.

May I please know from which showroom in Chennai did you purchase and did they give test drive.

Re: Yamaha YZF R3 Review | The almighty conundrum, solved

I have been offered an R3 with a price tag of ₹3.9 lakh OTR at a showroom in Chennai. The only catch is that the bike is from the 2023 lot. Can I trust the dealer and go ahead with the purchase?

Try to get the month of manufacture. Dec 2023 would mean 14 months old and Jan 2023 would mean 25 months old. And ask for on road price of brand new lot model.

A 50k discount for showroom kept 2 yr old model looks nice in isolation but if you intend to use the bike for many years, you should ignore the discount and buy from latest lot (less than 4 months old). A 2 yr old model even if kept in showroom unused can have issues like rust, dry engine internals, battery issues, etc. The tyres when kept unused get hard and develop micro cracks on sidewalls, same with rubber gaskets which get hard and break causing minor oil leaks if unused for long time.

For the above thread, I got great responses which helped me solve my almost 4-yr enigma! So, welcome one, welcome all into the initial impressions, buying & ownership experience of my first Supersports bike - The BS6 / Euro 5 Yamaha YZF R3 (Icon Blue), a CBU Import from the land of 1000 islands - Indonesia!

Hey there! I just purchased a R3 in black about 10 days ago, overall the bike is amazing but i have a few issues with it. When i take the bike a little over 5000rpm the handle bar buzzes a lot, now since you mentioned that your bar ends were a bit loose, i checked mine and they are loose as well, how and where did you get them tightened? And did it solve the handle bar buzzing?

Also, does the clutch get lighter over time? Because i have ridden my bike for 250 kms now and my left hand hurts a lot in traffic due to the heavy clutch.

Looking forward to your reply, Thanks!

Hey man, Ensure the bike's condition to be pristine. Possibly push for additional accessories as addons. Make them sweeten the deal. I guess I know who that is. Anyway, my best wishes to u.

Hey man, bar ends in R3 are loose across all models. You'll get that buzz and its inevitable. Especially in the 4000 to 6000 rpm range. Its part of how the bike feels. At no stage it vibrates unlike other bikes. Its just that the buzz keeps growing and then subsides. Overall its tolerable in these RPMs and felt barely much in higher RPMs....

As for clutch its known to be tight. Unfortunately It'll remain that way man. Maybe the upcoming Gen 3 R3 that has slipper clutch will be light. But not this Gen 2 one....

Have you tried Shell? If yes, is it worth the price increase? The IO and HP pumps near my place have a bad reputation, hence am looking for other options.

Hi, Vinay
Sweet spot is 100-120 I'd say. But Yea it can keep 120 - 140 all day. I drove like this from Dindigul to Chennai and covered it in little more than 4 hours. Very capable. If it were a 400 cc, u can push for higher avg speeds. But its just a 321 cc motor. So, go a liiiittttllleeee easy on it.

Hey man,
I never tried Shell tbh. I dont see the value for money here. If shell charges ₹118 per litre, I can get the same 95 Octane Petrol for ₹108 in other bunks. Helps me top up 1.5 ltrs more in a way for every tank full for the same money. But the ones who use Shell have no complaints whatsoever.

U can try Bharat Petroleum / Reliance. I mostly fill at BP near my place. But preferably do not top up normal petrol. R3's high compression engine performs way better with 95 Octane Petrol and kinda suffers from loss of power while running at sustained higher speeds on normal petrol from HP/BP/IOCL...
