Transformation of a Pulsar 150 into a 180/200-like bike.. is it possible?

Guys, I have a 2003 P150; it was a good first bike..

But sadly its time to sell.. too underpowered for my needs. Its a shame, since the original Pulsar is a really beautiful bike. Armed with nostalgia and poor resale value, I am considering a major overhaul, with the aim of performance while throwing mileage to the wind.

1) Is it possible to change the engine? Since the specifications of p180/150 and maybe even 200 are somewhat similar; can a mechanic, with the reqd parts mount a 180 engine/gearbox on my current chassis?

2)Can it be done for under 30,000? If it can't then I might as well go and buy a secondhand 200-250 bike. I'm only looking at engine/gearbox and swingarm (if at all mods r needed there)

3)I've heard several rumors of guys fitting imported second hand engines on their pulsars. Can that be done too?

Thanks

Dude, save that 30,000 bucks and add to it whatever you get for your Pulsar when you sell it and buy a new/used bike that suit your power needs.

Thanks, guys.. Sankar, I'm only getting 20 grand if I sell my current ride. That is the reason for this project. Phalimiman, thanks, and Roger that!

@cesar82, do you have any guarantees that, your current bike, after modifications, will perform like a new 180 / 200 / 220 bike ?

You have used your bike for 5 years already. You have enjoyed the rides. How much longer do you want to stretch it ? Even if the modifications you are planning result in a sufficiently good bike - remember that your 150 is what Bajaj had produced 5 years back. The new bikes would have current know-how, developments from over the last few years. And there is nothing like a factory finish.

It's not like you have a vintage that can only be re-created. Go get yourself a new bike. The modifications that you are thinking of will take much more money, time & energy than you think. And the peace of mind from a new bike is far better, esp in this case.

yes its very much possible...but do it only if u aren't thinking of buyin a new bike in the near future coz then u won't feel like seeling it...check my garage.gears also,u can change them to 1 down 4 up pattern...swingarm from the 180 is a retro fit......

Hitanshu bhai, Me three!
Cesar, I have got a pulsar 150 dts i converted to 180. And yes the bike did perform much better.
AFaik, 150. 180 and 200 have same stroke. So the engine was bored, sleeved and fitted with a 180 piston. The head was modded accordingly and in went 180 s valves.
It wont cost you 30k! Not even 10k.
In your case you have to go for the180 classic s piston.
But imho, i second Sankar, Sell it! 20k is a good price for 03 150, pay it as down payment for a Zma, Apache rtr and you will be much better off!

Cesar, I still request you to do a rethink! From my experience, whatever you do, whether you make it a 180 or 200 you wont be satisfied with the Pulsar!
IMHO, check out the Apache Rtr/ fi or the Fz16, just take a test ride and you will realize the difference!

Pulsar 150 to 180

A little history,

30/04/2004 my joy knew no bounds as i was just gifted a brand new Pulsar 150 DTSI. I had just turned 18 a few days ago and this was supposed to be my birthday gift. Years went by and i was more deeply in love with my baby. She has been with me through thick and thin and never has she stalled on me, unless she ran out of fuel. She was being maintained in the best way possible till a year and a half ago, when i had to quit my job as i was starting my own business. Since then all i could give her was a couple of services and regular DIY oil changes.
Its been 7 years and 4 months since then and my baby has run 79,511 kms till today. She has been warning me about this since almost a month and finally, today the engine seized. I have been planning to get her back to her pristine state since a while and now it seems that the time has come.

Now my query is, Since the internals are the same for a 150dtsi and 180dtsi except for the bore and stroke, is it possible to fit the 180dtsi bore kit on the 150 without much hassle?
I don't mind a little drop in fuel efficiency but i want to have the same reliability and the hasslefree nature of the bike as before.

Re: Pulsar 150 to 180

I have a pulsar 150 UG2. I first changed the cylinder to that of 180 and head to that of 200.(150 crank, 180 block, 200 head) Please note its not a straightforward plug and play. One needs to change the connecting rod to accommodate bigger piston pin. I also changed the carburetor to BS29. Recently I again changed the cylinder to P200 and head was already P200. (150 crank, 200 block, 200 head). One of the oils circulating pipe exit on the 200 block cylinder needs to be blocked as pulsar 150 doesn't have intake hole. . So far its running perfectly fine. current mileage is close to 40kmpl which earlier was around 45kmpl. However, my top speed has gone down from 115 to 105 kmph. Somehow the rpm gets restricted at top end. The CDI is still the same as that of P150 UG2
