Have heard local service guys telling, its better to remove chain guard to prevent rear wheel lock-up if chain breaks.

However that puddle of oil came from behind the sprocket cover. A large object took a ride on the top run of the chain to cause that amount of damage. I had a top hat spacer do the same on the blade which locked the backwheel thankfully while in a straight line.
Anyway keep us all posted bud.

Now that rings louder than my morning alarm in my ears. I got a an August '04 180dtsi, done about twice the mileage as you. Something like this happens to my motorcycle, i'd leave it there itself and continue my wait to buy something better.
