Sorry no more updates for a while longer. advised not to! Videos already posted on you tube, might be the latest news for a while, however I might post a run with a gps onboard, for people who would not trust the speedo readings in a youtube video.
Any way,5l is cost in parts (bom) only. Can't expect 130+bhp/260nm cruisers to cost less than 55bhp ones. That too on diesel, with running cost as low as 2rs a km. top speed to be limited to 125mph, why would someone want 150kph top speed from so much power? I tell you,150kph is a joke on the prototype itself.production bike would do 150 in les than 8secs from stand still.
Engine is a point of debate, mjd is least expensive, but does not do to o well on Nvh front, not enough power a well.
Had my latest road test on chilly monday morning. it was quite unusual for this time of the year for the temperatures to be that low. There were dust storm and lightning all night, and it began to rain when i woke up at 3.30am. i along with my friend had decided to set out at 4am towards rishikesh.
When I saw the weather in morning, thought there goes our plan to the drain. Anyway poured 4ltrs of Diesel + 1 ltr of vegetable oil into the tank, started the bike at about 4am to let it warm up. Another 15 mins were spent in inspecting all the bolts and wiring etc. On our last road test we some how escaped disaster, once we were back after the road test i realised that the link that connects the rear brake lever to master cylinder was floating around without the nut and only the bolt through it. That bolt could have come off due to vibration or infinite reasons and could have caused some sort of accident. This time all the nut&bolts were checked with a torque wrench.
Phone GPS was switched on and taped onto speedo consol, it took about 5 mins but locked onto 9 sats and showed an accuracy of under 4mtrs.
Then we set off , at around 4.30 fresh(with some headache) from last nites party,First comes the Specially designed offroad course for 4x4s that connects my workshop to sidcul(industrial estate).May be Wind&rain Gods wanted to see India's First Turbo Diesel motorcycle in action, wind went calm and rain vanished all together, unusual after such a storm all through the night.
Crossed that crap road to sidcul on snails pace, its soo easy to put down your bike there (I aswell as my friend , have put down our bikes(pulsar) a few times there in such conditions because of wet and slippery mud.
Anyway escaped that and then it was smooth sailing till Haridwar Nainital road, where we found Traffic jam (all Trucks). Did not try to carve our way, waited in line to cross the bridge ,after which we had to take seperate road to Chandi Devi temple, that road extends to Rajaji national park,Chilla and then to Rishikesh. We chose it over the main highway because of less traffic and lovely dense forest around it.
After the bridge , there was little bit of hilly section, about 4-5km and then the road was pretty much straight.
It was first time the bike was to see little bit of twisty road, I wast worried because even turns in the city lets you know what the machine is capable of.
being first time i took it easy because we were miles asway from any kind of help if something went wrong, and we were first time running on blended diesel on road.
After that our 4hour ride went without much fuss,Did not try too many things, just enjoyed my time on a torque monster (although did not use all the torque available) and ofcourse enjoyed foothills and ganga on one side of the road.Lovely place lovely weather.
In chilla we found a patch which was looking better than the rest of the road, and took the bike to 150+. All i can say about the bike at that sort of speed is it leaves me scared somewhat. its not that some thing feels wrong or it does not feel confident, but the way it gets there and that turbo whine, also the fact that its a handbuild bike and none of its components have been tested as they should be for that sort of power. There are lot of bikes which make you smile when you open the throttle, not this one. events ,the noise, feeling of being left behind, feeling of holding the handle bars very tight because they seems to be getting away from you when you open the throttle etc all combine and induce some sort of fear in you, atleast in me it does. But Dont worry that smile comes, it comes a little bit late but it does. It comes when you stop the acceleration, just cruise!! Cruise at 130/140 does not matter. i found myself smiling infact laughing when i held the speed at 130 for about 15/20 seconds, i was not smiling for fun, i was laughing on my self, thinking how scared i was. Now i understand what sort of job Test pilots for Jet manufacturing companies must be.
Main technical observation was that front suspension needs an upgrade, they need to be wider on the triple tree and they need higher rate of compression. present rate of compression is good only for about 80 may be 90 kph. any thing above , specially 120+ you get too much of road feedback from the handlebars. Its not the bike starts to jump up and down, but when you get soo much of info through your plams, it becomes an additional burden for our sensory system and mind. Mind will immideately engage in processing it and understanding. In short, you are not relaxed, you are constantly computing something. All this useless work bacause of slow compression rate.
other than that our ride was enjoyable and sucessfull, we covered more that 200km, dancing several times from haridwar to rishikesh . we got amazing fuel economy of 24kmpl,despite several burnouts and useless revving. Most of it because major part of journey was covered on Idle in 5th gear.
If you guys have any more questions or thoughts ,put them down, it feels its only me who is posting in this thread, and noone wants to read .is it so?
I read this thread regularly but keep quiet because I'm in complete awe of what you have achieved. Waiting for next updates. Keep up the great work.
Pretty awesome videos. Would you also like to post a few pics of the bike?
Hey dustom, i am also silent reader of your thread, what you have done is really amazing. I mean you build a bike in your garage and that too with a diesel engine :o. I really have no idea on this subject neither can suggest you something, thats the reason i have not posted anything. Keep posting the stuff we are really enjoying it :-)
dear DUSTOM, i read it too, and every time i do i just pushes me further to start with my cruiser building project, nothing close to the levels you are building. but each time i am pushed i end up buying a part for my to be built bike. :)
its just that i dont like bajaj that much and there isnt anything in between Avenger and Harley [no offence to RE owners but i dont like the idea that even after 60yrs the oil from a brand new RE bike leaks after about riding 200kms continuously = meaning almost no technical advancement.]
EDIT: waiting for the pics of the bike and how this would looks once the cosmetics are in place...

Hey dustom, you are in a better position than the test JET pilots - YOU HAVE built the bike and are sure of everything unlike them. And it is a good idea to tighten all main bolts using a torque wrench!

I'm sure there are a lot of guys reading this thread. Just that we cannot contribute to your amazing work. clap:
BTW - What is the top whack achieved? Life becomes bliss beyond 180 in both 2 wheels as well as four and one needs to be adequately protected!!
All the best in your endeavor!

You have 43000 views to your thread so there are a lot of people reading about it. :) Keep going and let us know how the final product turns out. I too am a regular on your thread!
I have attached a Rocket 3 Pic, this is the look i am after. i have managed to bring the base platform very close to this. In a time when every one in the market is working very hard to make there small mopeds look big and powerful, i have worked quite hard to make it look Normal and usual motorcycle( i would not say small motorcycle).
when i used to bring my Zen engined motorcycle onto the streets of the town, it usually ended up looking like a bike rally within 15 mins, followed by tution going students and autowalas and even cycle walas, trying to know *** is on the road.
What is most amazing is that i now have managed to use an engine twice the size and weight (Gearbox also almost twice the size of zen gearbox), and still has managed to actually reduce the wheel base by an inch as compared to Falcon's avatar(with zen engine).I guess this is also India's first ever Crdi motor transplant,is it?
Another amazing thing is that this bike runs with such a low noise signature that general public on the street does not even notice that something unusual just passes them by. There are no panels rite now, and i have been on towns main streets 3 times, and .....Nothing.. no fuss no mela atall.I was followed by only 2 motorcycles on our latest run, one of the guy came alongside, asked me which bike , what engine ,top speed etc. he was surprised to know it was diesel, I told him it was 6l V-8, poor guy believed me and went away happy thinking he witnessed a V-8 bike in india.
I see the bike daily and to me it would appear great and goodlooking, but my friends tell me it does not look unusual even without the paint and panels. according to them it looks good on the run and has some road presence aswell.
Top speed i have hit is 169kph, on our latest run for which videos have been posted already(chilla-rishikesh), max i did was around 154 on GPS(although if we convert RPM-Gearing-Tyre rotation it should have been 159kph) so i guess i would say i have been to 160kph till now.
Rite now the bike has been given to a local paint shop, that guy will be painting it, also will be making a speedo consol and tank cover etc. Till that time i am designing Rear wheel hub again, present hub is about 8kg(all mild steel construction), new hub will be all aluminium with steel sandwich. It will probably come out 3.5-4kg. few other weight reduction plans in place.
Rite now i am attending a few interviews for job, need to start saving money to go racing as no one has come forward with some sponsership, i had written to a lot of companies, ranging from batteries, motorcycle manufacturers, tyre manufacturers hell even pseudo energy drinks.
i guess most of them did not even read my mail.
I have also attached a spec sheet of various big bikes as available in India, Most of the stats have been taken from international bike review websites and official pages, there may be some errors though.
Thats about it for now. keep using that keyboard when you are on this thread, else buttons will get all rusty .
Thanks Everyone
