Welcome to the RD club and a whole new world of motorcycling (which includes numerous visits to garages and spare parts shops as well as getting to know the engine intimately).
I would highly recommend a visit to
www.rddreams.com and while you're there get the CDI kit (getting it is not as easy as I make it seem) which will take care of all your tuning issues.
If you have bearing noise and play at the crank DONT rip her. Open the engine up, get the crank set by a good mechanic and replace the bearings if necessary. You will find more information at the rddreams forum - cant go wrong there.
Congrats, and best of luck. The shogun deal sounds nice..

If well maintained, that is not so. The only recurring problem on that bike is the timing of the CB points and once you get your CDI that problem is taken care of. Thereafter you only need to ensure that your crank is properly balanced and set - it will give you years of trouble-free service.
as you are a yamaha Rd350 owner, you will certainly need to connect with these people.
Its tough to maintain an Rd and finding parts is the biggest hassle. Hence here is a group of many rd owners and ex-owners.
good luck with the bike

yh i knw its hard to break the shackles but truth remains RD350 has been RIPed by most owners since the emergence of motorbiking age..gaz guzzler high maintenance, absence of service station are some of the factors responsible for RD350's funeral..bt to me theres mre to it then mourning...i say yamaha should redefine it creation, and roll out a new-generation more stronger more effecient, more contemporay RD350 ...well it has been said that if you cant invent then reinvent..
be proud of it man...u have the meamest and most powerful bike in the market today...drool over it...flaunt it ..zoom ahead ...bt keep it in shape as it will always ask for frequent check ups..

Let me tell you about one RD that remains under wraps for months together - mine. The only thing I needed to get checked up periodically were the battery and the CB points. With Chinoy's CDI, I dont even need to check points. Just top up battery and start running.
Its as simple as that - a two stroke doesnt require checkups and stuff. As long as its able to breathe in fuel and spark at the right time it will keep running forever.
Mine has been running for 19 years now. Beat that !
whoa! thamks for all that super info and help ppl...really appreciate it...
by the by, my RDs running a CDI ignition too...aint sure which make etc...the pre owner said it was sumthin made in banglore...
have given my crank to be rebuilt and get rid of the play...n a new set of bearings...
(starts feeling the "RD maintanece syndrome" already!) heh...no regrets tho...its an awesome AWESOME machine!!
@CBR1000f:- no buddy...its a red one... dunno if it was painted red recently tho...the paint seems in decent shape..
