NEW DELHI: Japanese two-wheeler major Yamaha plans to foray into the Indian scooter market by next year and will set up a separate body assembly line at its Surajpur plant in Uttar Pradesh for this purpose.

The firm's wholly-owned subsidiary, India Yamaha Motor Pvt Ltd, is investing Rs 10 crore to set up the body assembly line at the plant.

"The scooter market in India is huge and we want to have a strong presence. Now we are preparing to launch a scooter here within 2012," India Yamaha Motor Pvt Ltd CEO and Managing Director Hiroyuki Suzuki told PTI.

They have been saying this for the past 5 years or so..lol:

A news update as per the BS motoring website:

Yamaha gearing up to launch scooters

As per the article, Yamaha want to first cater to the educated urban buyer and then target the rural buyers. I guess by the time Yamaha comes out with its products for rural masses, they already might have got one from Yamaha rivals. :D

The long awaited scooter from India Yamaha Motor – ‘Ray’ will now soon get into production. The company has set up an additional assembly line which will be dedicated to the scooter production at its Surajpur facility (Uttar Pradesh).

In the meanwhile, Ray has cleared the homologation and is certified by the Manesar based International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT).The 100-125cc scooter targeted at the fairer sex is due to be launched around Diwali

Went to get my bike serviced on Sunday @ Yamaha Thane - Mumbai.
The service advisor did mention that the Ray is coming soon to the market.
Ganpati festival is most likely the time of launch.

Black & Pink? :Shockked: Looks are subjective, but I hate that colour combination. And the center head-lamp like the Dio. Another addition to an already overcrowded scooter market. Maybe they could have considered bringing in some performance machines, instead of scooters. Some affordable performance motorcycles which common people could have enjoyed without spending a fortune. And yes, just like I mentioned somewhere in another motorcycle thread, can't they not find a better name than 'Ray'?? Huh?!!

looks awkward and the color scheme is straight out of a pondi movie. a complete let down this by Yamaha. they need to bring a terrific 250 cc motorcycle to save face from this upcoming blunder

That is just the model showcased at the Auto Expo, so don't hate it for the colour shown there. Need not necessarily wear the same colours when launched. However, we cannot rule out the chances of the company offering this colour scheme though to attract the ladies.

Agreed that the headlamp does look a little "DIO" like, but the Honda Dio is over shadowed by the Activa, so I guess the Ray will not be termed as a Dio rip-off; mainly because the Dio is seen quite less now-a-days.

Heard this is gonna be priced less than 50k and will be out on Sept 14th, 2012. Booking has started with some dealers.

A call to the Thane dealer and I was told that the launch date is 17th September and prices will be disclosed on that day itself. The dealer says that they are not accepting any bookings and that two colours disclosed for the Ray are Pink and Orange. Guess the launch is aimed at the fairer sex then.

Ray launched with Ex-showroom price of 46000 /- . Ray uses 113 cc engine.
