May 2022: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only bikes that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

re: May 2022: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

As always Royal Enfield is doing REALLY well in terms of sales and they're only behind the big 4 (Hero, Bajaj, Honda, TVS) in terms of overall sales. The Classic 350 is setting the sales chart on fire as always.

While the 650 Twins are still the best selling >500cc bikes on the market they seem to be doing this dance of up and down in terms of sales these past few months where the sales are between 2200-2500 units one month and below 1500 the next month. Sales picked up exponentially during the 4th quarter of 2022 as sales went from about 1250 units in October 2021 to 2300 units in December 2021 and since then the up/down dance has been going on at Royal Enfield.

Is this some new kind of odd-even rule I haven't heard about ?

1729 dispatches for the Suzuki VStrom is crazy! The older 250 twins never crossed 3 digit figures. I suspect this has to do with the initial launch buzz.

Surprised to see absolutely no separate mention of Jupiter 125. It has a 3 month waiting period and selling like anything. If the numbers are included in Jupiter with 110cc then the segment type needs change from 100-110cc to 100-125cc.

I believe that TVS Jupiter numbers are UP mostly because of Jupiter 125.

Re: May 2022: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

150-160cc Segment being dominated by Yamaha! Who would have thought that FZ, MT-15 and the R15 will rank above the Pulsar 150 in the sales charts! Along with the Aerox, Yamaha currently makes the most desirable bikes in that segment and has been aptly rewarded. More power to Yamaha!

Apache is still holding fort at #1 but we must remember that Apache includes 3 cubic capacities, i.e., 160,180,200.

With no updates in 10 years, what else does Bajaj Auto expect? They would want to hope that the newly launched Pulsar N160 can bring in some of those bread and butter numbers but I have my doubts. The Apaches are just better in that price range. Pulsars of this day and age are too heavy for their own good. In fact the new N160 has a kerb weight 2kg more than my 13 year old Pulsar 220F and also makes 25% less power. The 150 is even worse off. I wouldn't recommend either one to anyone looking for something in this segment. The sales numbers make this amply clear.

Re: May 2022: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

@Aditya - Thanks for the numbers! If possible, it would be good to see the sales of >500cc motorcycles by their category (Adv vs. street vs. cruiser..) something similar to distribution of car sales by body style.

Shame that Ducati, BMW don't share their numbers. But some observations:
1. Husqvarna doesn't sell at all when compared to KTM. Wonder what keeps this brand going? Maybe its just another KTM with a different skin so why not?
2. KTM 200 is consistently outselling KTM 250 - looks like people don't find the 40k extra for 5Bhp/5NM worth it?
3. KTM 125 isn't selling much - similar story as above playing out? People seem to prefer the 200 with just 15k premium (on ex. price).
4. Dominar twins are doing ~700-1k/mth while the KTM twins are doing ~1.5k/mth. Guess nothing is going to change this equation for Bajaj.
5. Wonder how the sales numbers of >650cc bikes are to be read - these seem to be coming in lots & in limited numbers so unlikely to reflect the true sales trend? E.g. no one knows when the next lot of CB500 is going to come. Same with Hayabusa or Africa Twin i guess.
6. Aprilia RS660 was discussed with much excitement but seems to be a dud - zero deliveries. Tuono V4 - less said the better.
7. Kawasaki W800 seems to be a dud - the pricing seems to have been optimistic or is it the lack of power from a near 800cc engine? On the other hand 650RS seems to be outselling the Z650 mostly - neither seems to have sales anywhere close to the Ninja or the Versys range though.
8. Kawasaki is selling 3 times the bikes compared to Triumph though Triumph has a far better spread (Cruisers, street, naked, bobbers, adv...). Something to do with pricing them right most of the time I guess.
9. Trend seems to indicate that the Tiger660 will outsell the Trident660 and sales are shifting over? Either way, these are not the sales Triumph expected but given the pricing, not sure they could get any better.
10. The sales of RE 650 are showing a massive surge & drop month-on-month - like an absolute sine-wave. What is really causing this? Is it supply side issues? But they sure have killed sales for everyone else out there with a 650cc or there-abouts engine.

Re: May 2022: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

Since Classic Legends (JAWA and YEZDI) always shy away from giving their dispatch numbers, I am pleased to share the data of their registered vehicles for the year 2022.

January 2022: 2369
Feb 2022: 3433
March 2022: 4263
April 2022: 3713
May 2022: 3566
June 2022: 3297

The numbers are nowhere near to their direct competition (Royal Enfield) and not sure how they are going to survive in long run.

I usually don't follow the bike scene but surprised to see Apache selling really well. Is it that good?

No mention of the Pulsar 250 twins? Since release I have seen only 1 or 2 in bangalore roads and hence I guess they dont really sell that well? But how come no mention of the factory dispatch numbers?

And where are the OLAs?

Suzuki SX 250 as expected is finally helping sell the 250s. Altough a bit pricey compared to its sibling Gixxer 250, it attracts more buyers mostly for the awesome looks IMO. Closely eyeing this one as a replacement for my 14 year old RTR 160 unless TVS brings in an adv by year end.

Their offerings 160 and 200 are more or less the benchmark in respective segments now. Refined overtime both are probably the best in their respective price points among street nakeds.

What's the deal with Unicorn? Drastic drop this month. Is there any update expected shortly?
