Car Wrapping

I recently got the opportunity to get 3 cars wrapped (more on this later...) from The Wrap Shop, Mulund (owned by Siddharth Kulkarni) and I am happy to report that they do a fantastic job of wrapping the entire car, or parts of it, depending on what you want from them.
I did 3 full colour change wraps on 2 cars:
1. My Honda Crio in Gloss Metallic Black
2. My Honda Crio (*rewrapped) in Satin Pearl Nero
3. My friend's C250d in Satin Pearl Nero

What I like:
1. Honest, hard working and transparent. He gave me the option to choose from an original Avery Dennison wrap and a first copy of the same wrap. The original one costs 3 times as much. No prizes for guessing the one I chose.
2. Forever willing to learn, and doesn't have a big ego. Open to inputs and pretty receptive to requests (I requested for some weird stuff, and Siddharth complied without any complaints. He also asked me if he could put his company stickers on my car, and I politely refused. Most people don't ask. They stick it without asking)
3. Neat work. Clean lines. Good materials used.
4. Attention to minor details and loves our cars, just like we all do.
5. Works very hard to give you the shade of your choice and gives very honest advice in maintaining it.
6. Sends work in progress photos. Something, we team-bhpians JUST LOVE. You feel connected to the process.

What I don't like:
1. Workshop is remotely located. UBER and Google Maps are your only friends that help you reach there.
2. No cleaning or detailing offered on delivery of the car. Dust and other elements go into the car. The least that should be done is a good wash and vacuum as a value-added service.
3. Time taken to do the job (even though it's pretty painstaking) is a painful 3-4 days.

Pricing: Ranges from reasonable to expensive for the original wraps.

1. How much did you pay?

2. What's the typical life of a car wrap?

3. Any issues with cleaning / washing? Bird poop? Special care needed?

I paid 25k for my Brio. My friend paid 35k for his Mercedes. Labour and materials cost more as the car becomes larger.
The life of a car wrap is as long as you can keep it on without getting tired of it.

The adhesive on the wrap is not harmful to the car, and helps in protecting the original paint of the car. Also, you get to see your car in varying shades through her life with you, so it's a win-win situation.

If you take a matte or a Satin wrap (like in my case), you need to worry about it even lesser than actual paint. No swirl marks, no irregularities and a very uniform finish throughout the body. No wax or polish required. You can wash it everyday or clean with a cloth. Bird Poop is known to damage car wraps, but it's effect on paint is far worse.
A glossy wrap or a chrome wrap or even a mirror finish wrap may require a lot of care as swirl marks are very easily seen on it.
The disadvantage here is that you can't buff or polish the wrap, but on the brighter side of things, you just need to change the piece, which takes 2 hours, tops. No paint matching etc. required.
I intend to keep this wrap for a year and change the colour to something else after the novelty wears off. No RC endorsement required for change of colour as it counts as an overlay and not a fundamental colour change.

Work seems neat, but i have couple of queries.

1. Are wraps legal ?
2. Are they scratch resistant ?

They are not illegal, but remember. The RTO says that any change made on a car without it's approval is illegal. So you interpret what bakes your cake.

Depends on the wrap you choose. Scratches will be visible for sure, and a larger scratch may take off the wrap and expose the paint underneath.

Damn those cars look sweet !! The work seems to be done very professionally, the matte finish looks even better.

Since the wrap is glued-on (I presume), will the original paint suffer from adhesive marks / stains when the wrap is removed ??

Nope. Not a mark. i know this, since I removed the Gloss Metallic Black wrap myself. The paint remains as good as new!

The wrap is not glued on. It's self-adhesive, akin to sticking a screen protector on a screen.

Quality job! Care to elaborate on the weird requests?

Very neat job. Must check him out sometime. If you have the need to change a particular part of the wrap, what will it show colour difference? For e.g if the original wrap is much older than the replacement piece.

On RTO i feel if your RC book shows one colour and your car is completely another colour, a cop CAN haul you up. Secondly, your wraps are fine but those wraps that very obviously look like mods are likely to also be more prone to be stopped by cops as they look like obvious changes.

I have been wanting to wrap my aged cars with the idea that they fill in the bumps with some metal paste and make it look normal. When I asked around was told that is not a possibility. Any idea if we can use the wrap approach to camouflage dents with fillings and make it look normal?

You could use a body filler that's evened out by sanding to match the original shape and then get them wrapped instead of painting after the prep.

The dents would have to be quite big or deep for the body filler not to adhere (and stay there) if you were told that it's not possible.

Heard a lot about this Guy who happens to be a Dentist and does wrapping of automobiles out of pure love n passion. Correct me If I m wrong

Siddharth is my childhood friend & though being a dentist was always interested in vinyl / decal work hence its good to see him pursue his passion.

Other than that he is an Audiophile & was much into high end audio installs as well.

Hope to see some more work from the WRAPSHOP in the future :thumbs up
