I concur. I have been driving cars for more than 25 years now and have NEVER used any kind of "premium" fuel, always stuck to standard/plain/regular fuel, be it diesel or petrol. My preferred brand has been HP, having tried IO and BP as well.

I have always been a proponent of using regular fuel, but I'm currently exploring different options and seeking advice from others. It could be that Nayara fuel was the source of the issue in my case.

Entirely depends on what fuel your car specifies as the minimum. My A4 for example requires 95 octane or higher, as specified in the manual and on a sticker inside the fuel lid.

So, do check your manual and inside the fuel lid before deciding “I haven’t ever used premium fuel and won’t use it”.

My endeavour has crossed 1.44 lakh km and I’ve only found better FE and smoother running with xtragreen higher cetane rated diesel. No harm in it.

Got my tires replaced to AT002. the stock had done close to 51k and although it had quite a lot of tread left - wasn't confident about taking them on long road trip in this weather.

Did close to 2,500 Km road trip with new shoes and except for slightly higher tire noise - i find them better and confidence inspiring than stock HT tires.
Will like to thank @PrideRed for all the guidance offered here in making me weigh my decision.

they costed me 18k per tire - that was the cheapest i could get

Last week, I completed a road trip to Arunachal and Meghalaya with my Fortuner 4x4 AT, covering 8300 kilometers in 25 days. The car was simply awesome. Be it smooth six-lane highways, broken roads, or flooded roads, whatever situation was thrown at it, the car took it without breaking a sweat.

I had done a couple of road trips with the BMW 3GT that I owned before the Fortuner. Though I took some very bad roads with the BMW, the main difference with the Fortuner is how stress-free it felt. With the BMW, there was always a small worry in mind if the car would be able to cross a particular bad stretch, what happens if it breaks down somewhere, etc. With the Fortuner, there was no such stress.

Another thing I noticed is the presence of Toyota service centers everywhere. I got the 20,000 kilometers service done in Siliguri.

Sharing a few pictures of the Fortuner in various landscapes through the trip.

As long as you fill 'normal' diesel from any of these branded pumps, its likely that they all came from the same refinery. Avoid any special diesels and certainly avoid any fuel additives - never add any oil related additives, if you have done so - please change the oil immediately to standard Toyota engine oil.

For BS6 vehicles just give them a healthy dose of highway use and you should be alright, ECU will automatically manage the emissions related business.

Standard engine oil is standardised by Toyota for everything from Glanza to Hycross to Fortuner. There are better choices available, but certainly not additives.
