So far, have driven only 1 day; hence will be posting a detailed review soon once I get to know the car more. This is the 2nd 4th generation SWIFT within our family.

PS: Exchanged our old 2nd generation Swift ZXi (2014) for this one.

Looks like a real beauty !! I have to admit, the silver and white colors look the best on the 2024 Swift- mine is Magma Grey.

Thank you
Yes I saw your post. The Grey looks smashing as well. My aunt owns one in the VXi MT variant.
I also wanted to ask, did you get the ECU updated as you mentioned in the previous post. Any meaningful changes you observed?

Sharing an experience on my 2024 Swift AGS, after having driven almost 400kms

1. Ride Quality. As stated before, exceptional ride quality. Previous Maruti models that we had in our family (Omni 1997, WagonR 2010, AltoK10 2014, Swift 2014, Ignis 2018); these cars used to feel a bit flimsy when driven around bad patches and the suspension used to give a huge thud sound along with being very stiff and uncomfortable as well. With this one, it has an SUVish feel and glides over potholes comfortably. I’m not slowing down over bad road surfaces and the ride remains comfortable. Also, front seats are excellent, but I miss ventilated seats from Seltos.

2. Steering. One of the major worries I had was steering, as leaving aside our old Swift, literally none of the newer Marutis had a good steering. Ignis being the worst I had owned with a steering; which always made me regret about the buying decision. With the new Swift, I’m happy to report that the steering is really fun again. The front end is really pointy; steering has a decent heft and completely returns to centre while taking any turns; although Seltos has a stronger return to centre action.

3. Features. Or rather the lack of it. Decently kitted enough, however, camera should have been better, and what I really miss is an arm-rest (which I never missed in the previous SWIFTs). The driving ergonomics in this generation has changed considerably compared to previous SWIFTs. This one feels as I stated before, more SUVish; I can actually see the bonnet end; the seating posture is like a tall boy; and for a tall person like me; I actually prefer this. Rest touch screen response is excellent, wireless charging is good; orange ambient lighting is excellent; I love the MID, manual dials. AC performance is awesome as well.

4. Lighting. The interior lighting is good and I specially like the orange ambient lighting at the front. Coming to headlights. The projector LEDs along with LED fogs perform exceptionally well. In certain situations, I find this setup much better than the LEDs on my Seltos as well.

5. AMT. I never had an extensive experience with AMT; just the TD ones. So, I know it’s meaningless to compare it with a TC. But that’s what I usually drive. Coming to the gearbox, I can feel all shifts whether it’s an upshift or a down. 1st to 2nd gear is highly noticeable. However, the manual mode is really fun. The major USP of this setup that I’ve experienced is very good mileage. But I’ll still reserve my comments till I calculate it using the tankful method.

6. Engine. While I do understand the negativity around it. I’ll try to give my limited experience here. So the engine is really smooth and refined. If you’re sitting on idle with all windows closed, you might even think that the car has turned off. With the AMT, the car pulls off cleanly without any vibrations using the creep mode. Also, having experienced K12C in the latest BS6.2 avatar, what this engine gains mostly is the low end torque. In gear acceleration is actually very good, and overtaking using the manual mode is quite easy. The engine note however is very different compared to what we were adjusted to before. Overall a decent engine with good mileage but a wrong gearbox. This one actually deserved their TC.

So this was a brief summary of my experience so far. Will keep on updating as the journey moves on.

PS: I have driven all previous 3 generations of SWIFT extensively ; having owned all 3 within our family.

Yes, I did get the ECU updated. I have not noticed any changes as such. But going by my Verna experience (in the 2023 Verna thread), it is better to check with the OEM from time to time for any ecu related service needs.
All in all, I agree with the points you have mentioned in the post #139. The 2024 Swift AGS is indeed a comfortable, no-nonsense urban commuter. A note on comfort: I undertook a ride in the city the other day with 5 adults, including two 6+ footers, and they had no complaints whatsoever sitting in the car. Something about the interior design just helps with overall comfort.

Thanks again for the information. I have my first service due on 18th November; will make it sure to check with the service team for any updates to ECU.

And yes, agree with the ride comfort. The car even with full load and AC turned on all the time feels supremely comfortable. Kudos to Maruti/Suzuki for optimizing the suspension & engine tuning so well for our roads. I just wished the top model at least received a few basic features from the Baleno.

Overall, very happy with my purchase so far.

Re: 2024 Maruti Swift Review

With the DZIRE scoring five star rating in Global NCAP voluntary test, can we expect a similar rating for the humble SWIFT? Both are essentially having the same updated platform with similar safety features.

2024 Maruti Swift Review-safercarsforindia.jpg

Though Maruti may have sent the new DZIRE voluntarily to GNCAP to make-up for the previous gen's abysmal rating; I seriously wish they send the SWIFT as well to GNCAP / BNCAP.

Finally, I got to spend some time with the 4th generation Swift. Since Aditya has covered all the details in the official review, I won’t repeat them. I drive a 2014 Swift (2nd generation), so my observations are primarily going to be a comparison between these cars. I was excited to drive the new Swift as it gives you a good insight into how far Maruti has come in over a decade.

2024 Maruti Swift Review-whatsapp-image-20241206-13.13.43.jpg

• I’ll start with what it’s like to live with the 2nd-gen Swift. To sum up the last 10 years, the car has stayed true to what Maruti stands for - stress-free ownership. Apart from some scrapes that the car has seen thanks to driving in a city like Mumbai, there have been no major issues. The car has done ~40,000 km and is still running on its original clutch. However, since the car is driven by my sister and also some drivers over long distances when my father wants to travel, the clutch wear is on the higher side. The pedal has become heavy now and I will get a new clutch during the annual service which is due in April. Just last month, I got the check engine light with a P0420 error. It’s the catalytic converter error which is sad because that’ll be the first major expense for the Swift. I haven’t gotten it fixed yet, but I will get it done soon. For now, the PUC certificate also showed that the emissions were within the limit. Apart from that, it’s been pretty smooth sailing.

• I’ve always liked the way Swift looks. The 4th generation car doesn’t look all that different from the 2nd generation Swift. Majority of the people don’t even notice it thinking it’s the 3rd-gen Swift that came in 2018. But even as a standalone car, I like the way the 4th generation Swift looks. It’s a little more rounded compared to the 3rd generation car. The design elements are a bit more subtle as well.

• Even from the rear, it looks very similar to the outgoing Swift and I wish they’d given a sharkfin antenna. This basic antenna doesn’t look very modern. In fact, my Swift also had the same antenna, but it has broken off now.

• The reversing camera on the tailgate feels like an odd placement. It is prone to damage and doesn’t look great as well. The previous generation had it tucked in near the number plate area which was much better.

• On the inside, the new Swift looks good. You can go low with the seating position and get that go-kart-like feel. My Swift VXi doesn’t have a height-adjustable driver seat, so you’re seated high. I prefer the driving position of the new Swift simply because it offers a bit more versatility. GTO mentioned that he loved how the centre fascia tilts towards the driver. It is a very driver-centric cabin.

• The seats are also very comfortable and the side bolstering makes you feel like you’re a part of the seat. Everyone who has sat in my 2nd-generation Swift immediately remarked that the 4th-gen Swift’s seats felt nice. The fabric seats feel better than the leather (aftermarket) seats. Also, the overall support keeps you in place.

• I’m neutral on the dashboard designs of both cars. I don’t feel that the 2nd gen dashboard is very outdated. It’s purely functional and serves the purpose. The 2014 car also got the extendable cupholder next to the passenger side A/C vent which I use to keep small bottles cool. But in terms of ergonomics, both cars are just perfect.

• Big touchscreen is nice to use. Had no issues with it. Gets wireless Android Auto as well, which is great. What’s not great is that wireless charging isn’t fast. Moreover, there’s no cooling, so after a point, it won’t charge saying that the phone temperature is high and you cannot charge further. With wireless Android Auto and wireless charging, my phone’s battery charge dropped over a couple of hours of driving. We used to see this problem when wireless charging was new in cars. Maruti should either have a fast wireless charging option or a cooling fan underneath like we’ve seen in some newer cars because the way things are in the Swift, it just feels like a gimmick.

• Sad sound system. This really doesn’t feel like a big upgrade from the Swift that I drive. I understand that the Swift is a budget hatchback, but the top end is no longer what one can call cheap. The sound quality is very basic.

• Great to see that the Android Auto navigation is mirrored on the MID and you get turn-by-turn notes. Some people may find this useful, but I still prefer watching the map on the main screen.

• This might be nitpicking, but I have to mention that certain things annoyed me in the new Swift.
  1. The indicator clicks are louder than my 2014 Swift. I like the clicks in the old Swift.
  2. The ORVM adjustment motor is louder in the 2024 Swift! Maruti has probably changed their vendor, but this one is clearly louder and doesn’t feel premium.
  3. The welcome message when you start the car, “Welcome to the Epic New Swift” is annoying.

• I didn’t spend a lot of time in the backseat. My sister who feels claustrophobic in the backseat of our Swift, felt similar in the new Swift as well. Black interiors don’t help.

• A lot has already been discussed about the 4-cylinder vs 3-cylinder engines, so I won’t get into that. But the stark difference is in the engine vibrations. At idle and low revs, you will notice the 3-cylinder vibrations on the pedals and even the steering wheel. These aren’t present in my 2014 Swift. It also helps that I recently got the engine mounts of my Swift replaced. But in general, the refinement levels are better in the old Swift.

• I get an average fuel economy of roughly 15 km/l in my Swift. I’m sure with the 3-cylinder, the FE would be slightly better.

• The 2024 Swift does sound good when you rev it hard. Through the mid-range and even at high revs, the engine sounds sporty and encourages you to use the entire rev range.

• The clutch is light, but the travel is on the longer side (in comparison with the 2014 Swift). Also, the bite point is high, which is why, I found myself consciously making an effort to modulate the clutch and accelerator to drive smoothly. This was never the case with the 2nd or 3rd generation cars. You could drive those cars smoothly without making any extra effort.

• Lovely manual gearbox in the new Swift. Throws are slightly shorter than my old car and the gears feels more sure slotting. GTO mentioned that after test-driving so many automatic cars, it’s a sheer pleasure to test-drive an MT and that too in a car like the Swift which feels like a go-kart for public roads.

• Glad to see a well-sized, well-placed and perfectly angled dead pedal. Super comfortable. Sorely miss a dead pedal in my Swift.

• The ride quality is compliant. That is just how it should be in a mass-market hatchback.

• A special mention of the electric power steering. In the past, we’ve all complained about the sticky steering in Maruti cars and the weak return-to-centre action. Even my Swift has a sticky steering which is very irritating. The 3rd generation Swift also had a weak return to centre action. But I am so glad that Maruti finally has calibrated the EPS in a way that the return to centre action is good. It now feels like driving a normal car. It still needs some effort, but it manages to straighten out on its own.

• Feels light on its feet and quick in the corners as well. Overall balance is good for you to enjoy the Swift on our roads. The rear of the car is also pretty light and steps out easily if you want to do a handbrake turn (in a safe environment).

• All in all, the 4th generation Swift feels like a decent upgrade over the 3rd generation. It carries forward the strengths and improves on some aspects. Not going to lie, the 3-cylinder does take some time to get used to, but once you’ve made your peace with it, you’ll be just fine.

Spotted this modified Tata Xenon when I was on my way to pick up (pun unintended) the Swift. It had some nice wheels and a very interesting sticker on the door!

Next to my 2014 Swift. Reminds me, I need to get the rear wheel cap!

Luckily found a spot next to a 3rd gen Swift:

Cannot avoid traffic in Bombay even on weekends. The light clutch is a boon when driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic:
2024 Maruti Swift Review-whatsapp-image-20241206-13.13.43-1.jpg

Good to see Android Auto show turn-by-turn navigation prompts on the MID:
2024 Maruti Swift Review-whatsapp-image-20241206-13.13.44-1.jpg

Auto start-stop feature is very irritating IMO. I had to switch it off every time I started the car:

The return to center action has vastly improved in the 2024 Swift. Here’s a video:

Re: 2024 Maruti Swift Review

The new swift looks stylish on the inside, the interiors look similar to baleno, however with small changes they surely also look good. The biggest turn off in this 4th gen swift is the three cylinder 1.2 litre engine. A 3 cylinder engine can never match a 4 cylinder in terms of refinement or performance.

I dont know why maruti thought to change the engine, when they already have the awesome 1.2 litre 4 cylinder K series engine. The said 4 cylinder engine is an absolute gem, absolutely silent on idle, the refinement is so good that sometimes you get confused whether it is running or not and even the performance is quite good.

Re: 2024 Maruti Swift Review

MSIL should have kept the 3 pot mill strictly for the Alto, Celerio, S-Presso, Wagon R and maybe even the Eeco. No matter how much the move to this 3 pot mill is tried being justified in the name of economy, I feel that this engine is a complete misfit on Swift's ethos. Another reason could be MSIL wanting to push customers subtly to higher margin products - the Fronx and Baleno; which seems more likely to be the case.

I am glad I have two Marutis with the 4 pot (Ignis and GV).

Am afraid they might go for 3 pot in the Brezza/GV lineup as well in the near future.

The 4 pot in Maruti is revv-happy, reliable, fun, fuel efficient, refined, all at the same time !

Re: 2024 Maruti Swift Review

I did have the first generation for 4.5 years and the second generation for 7 years; both were diesel, and there was nothing like it.

The first generation was a gem of an engine with great character.
The second generation was compromised but was more linear and had the character, still way better than the BS6 diesel

The third was a letdown for me in terms of size, and the lighter feel was higher, at least for me. The latest generation looks cool, but something feels missing, at least in the current market, which no longer has the craving for hatchbacks.

Swift is an emotion...

Re: 2024 Maruti Swift Review

Solid comparison. As the new Dzire is based on this, and this thing scored 4 stars in JNCAP (Japanese spec model though) I'm sure it will score decently in GNCAP too.

Never thought I'd say this but Dzire looks like a better package for not a whole lot more.

Let's see how this Z series engine fares in the long run. They already had the sweet little K12 but I guess change is constant (It's evolving, just backwards)

Hello Moderator Omkar,

I just wanted to give a possible solution to the P0420 error. It could be due to the O2 sensor, maybe due to the current E10-E20 petrol?

I had the same error on my Honda City 2014 i-VTEC. I cleaned the O2 sensor using WD-40's electrical contact cleaner. Link

I followed the steps from ChrisFix's video below:

My original post is in the 4th gen Honda City Thread. (Link (4th-gen Honda City : Official Review))

I hope this helps.

So I utilized the end year December period to purchase a new car in exchange for my 8 year old diesel car in Delhi-NCR, thanks to the 10 year diesel ban.

So the story starts with me not having any plans to buy a new car. Mentally I was prepared to run my Tata Zest XMS Diesel 2016 (1,26,000kms odo ) till end of the 10th year, and transport it to my hometown either Kolkata or Siliguri (I bought a new flat there this year), and let it be used there by my parents. But I was stuck with the predicament of having to purchase a new car in 2026.

Th Zest 1.3 MJD, the national diesel engine, has been a reliable workhorse for the last 8 years. It still ran on stock engine mechanicals till the day I sold it. There was 1 tyre replacement, 1 clutch replacement, 1 rear power window motor replacement, Harman system had given up in the 7th year and an after market HU which never ran successfully. A slightly torn driver seat cover, and mat AC vent knobs broken was all the depreciation. The car was immaculate and gave me a mileage of 24 kmpl in city conditions and 26 in highway runs. The Zest has travelled extensively in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jharkand, Bihar, Orissa, and was taken all the way to Baralachala pass, it never broke sweat, an ultra dependable car I owned. This was the only vehicle which brought tears to my eyes when I handed over the keys to the sales guy in exchange for the new car !!

My better half had started pushing to exchange the car before the 10 year rule kicked in and the car would be scrapped. Also the GRAP 4 rules in Delhi-NCR does not allow me to use the car during the ban. I was stuck with commuting on my bike with a bad shoulder and back issue.

Preferences for new car - Had to be automatic. With worsening traffic conditions in Delhi-NCR and my left knee starting to give up nowadays, I was done with clutch and gear application. I was more happy to zip around on a TVS Jupiter at my home for sheer convenience of being gearless. Also I was on a limited budget and AMT had to be the choice. Wifey's preference was mileage because she was used to see a MID display or 24 kmpl on the Zest and was in no mood to compromise with mileage. Also she has been driving the torquey diesel motor of the Zest and was hesitant how she would handle a petrol manual car. My first car was a Hyundai I10 (1.2 Magna). Wifey had difficulty driving that. Automatic would provide the convenience of not having to get used to clutch usage from a diesel to petrol.
I am not much of a car features guy. My preferences were power windows, power steering, AC, steering mounted controls, safety standards, and a decent music system. The car shpuld drive well both on highways and city conditions. Budget was strictly below 9 lacs. I wanted to use the December month for the year end discounts. I had purchased my Zest in December too.

Test drives and shortlists:

Maruti Wagon R - Not a big fan of the boxy design, however the ZXI Plus AMT variant was in budget. Went to the showroom with my better half to have a look. She hates the Wagon R design. After long sighs we walked around the display vehicle. The deal breaker was the interior once we sat inside. It felt utterly bare bones for a top model which costed close to 8 lacs. Even the 1.2, 4 cylinder motor could not keep it in shortlist. No test drive taken. Standing besides it was a Celerio,

Maruti Celerio - It felt better than than the Wagon R being a lower car and slightly better dashboard. The red colour looks attractive under lights. The top variant AMT was cheaper than the Wagon R. It was kept under shortlist. I was okay to compromise with the 1.0 motor. No test drive taken.

New Maruti Dezire - The sub 4 meter sedan credentials felt at home with my Zest with a new exterior and interior design. It felt more plush than the outgoing model. For some reason the VXI AMT pricing was equal to Swift VXI AMT. Was kept in shortlist. No test drive taken. Now this dealership did not have any AMT test drive models hence none taken.

Hyundai Grand I10 Nios and Hyundai Exter SXO - The Hyundai twins were looked at. Exter SXO was pitched by the sales guy, was out of budget. Variants below that were bare bones. Grand Nios Sportz AMT test drive was taken. It felt a slightly better version of my 1st gen I10 with better interiors and engine. The 4 cylinder motor was smooth and had less jerks. Fit and finish was good. However Hyundai discounts were not at par. Was shortlisted.

Renault Kiger and Triber - Triber RXT AMT and Kiger RXT AMT (O) were considered. With discounts the Kiger was well within budget. Kiger has features, and space which is value for money at the price sold. It is the value proposition in the CSUV segment. The Triber felt okay in comparison to the Kiger, however the options of removing the last row and using the space as boot was tempting. Test drives for both were taken. The AMT is slow to take off and has significant lag. I am a sedate driver and am okay to live with the slow gearbox and transmission. The breaking point was mileage figures of 12-15 kmpl which was stated through random sources. Also ownership experience of Renault in unknown territory. Service cost is 42 paise/km. Was shortlisted.

Maruti Swift VXI AMT - Another Maruti dealership near the Renault showroom was visited. This staff were more responsive and test drive of Swift ZXI AMT was provided. The 3 cylinder felt responsive on the TD vehicle inspite of being abused. It felt a compact car with nice interiors (this is subjective for many). The handling was tight with typical hatchback dynamics. The pricing was within my budget. Unfortunately my Zest was sold at minimum price wkth exchange bonus. Deal done.

Initial Ownership - A lot has been said about the 3 cylinder motor. I find it pretty refined on the move ( I come from riding a Royal Enfield and Diesel car, vibes were part of DNA). The AMT is jerky in stop-go traffic and reverse functions. The car has run 200kms till now and MID already shows a mileage of 19 kmpl. I hope the jerkiness will thaw out with kms and servicing. Handling is tight and the low ground clearance keeps it planted on the road. Its fun to ride a hatchback after so many years. Swift is one of the only true hatchbacks left in the market which is skewed towards hatchbacks on stilts aka CSUV segment. I am thoroughly satisfied with my purchase till now. Will keep updating the thread further.
