Re: 2024 BMW 5 Series LWB (G68) Review

Congratulations @zee_bat. Against popular opinion, I personally love this generation of the 5 series. Wishing your cool dad many happy miles with this beautiful machine.

Congratulations on the purchase, the LWB 5 is a fine luxury sedan.

Agree with the fact that the rear seats have amazing cushioning and support everywhere. The basic no-frills setup with it's excellent recline angle, shoulder support and thigh support is spot-on.

Though I've not driven the new E, they say it's a bit more tied tied in corners and rolls lesser than the 5, what were your observations on this?

Looks lovely from the side. Thickk side profile gives peace of mind.

5- Series became aspirational for me the first time I read about it here. This is a modern, yet classy take on F-10. Looks stunning with the illuminated grill.

Wishing you and your family Happy Times.

The comparison in corners, in one single test drive, was honestly not enough for me to comment on to answer your question. But the 5 surely does have body roll over 70, though only noticeable if one tries!

How is the ingress/egress for your parents?
I found it a bit better than other sedans where in you sink in. The new 5 if my memory serves me well was better than usual sedans.

The opposite actually. The 5 has a better ride and lower roll on bad roads. The E will (relatively) rock you more side to side going over the same potholes. Didnt do a tight corner on either of them, so cant speak to that.

Congrats, zee_bat. This was my choice as well if I hadnt changed to go electric at the end.

The rear doors are the size of a MG COMET so you get a lot of space to get in and out with ease. The seats are actually placed higher up than a E and surely way higher than our older A6, so it’s much easier on the knees for my folks!

Re: 2024 BMW 5 Series LWB (G68) Review

Just wish BMW would launch the M540D here in India, ideally as a CKD. If there is sufficient demand for the regular Wheelbase M340i to be locally assembled, there should be just as much or more for the regular wheelbase M540D.

303HP amd 670 NM of torque would be a killer. Not to mention mild hybrid tech that helps the car to deliver a 1000+ km range on a full tank, while driving ay 110-120 kph on the highway throughout. Cherry in top is the 5.2 second 0-100 time.

A regular Wheelbase would mean the car won't be so ponderous to drive around in may fit even a self drive use case. Adaptive suspension would be nice as well. If BMW were to be able to pull this off for south of 1 crore ex-showroom, there should be serious intrest.

If excluding the rear seat from comparison, are there any advantages of spending more on the 5 series than the 3?

IMHO, if back seat is not going to be used that much, M340I is the way to go.

Having said that, interior quality is a step up, front seats are bigger, more accommodating and better cushioned, ride quality a step up and the speaker quality better too - all of this combines to give a much better feel good factor in the 5 which is also very important IMHO.

Many congratulations zee_bat on a wonderful car. Contrary to how it looks on paper, it is a good looking car in-person, and the interior is a couple of segments above the 3/C. I too was tempted by the decision to go for a 5 instead of the 3GL in Dec 2024, but the huge discounts on the 3GL meant that the price differential was too high to justify the segment jump then.

Wish you many happy miles with the car.

Ohh, please don't get our hopes high. I had huge expectations of seeing a 540i/ 540d in our market once Mercedes had launched the E450, and one big reason of not opting for the 530Li was that I would have surely had buyer's remorse if BMW launched one of these two tune of engines later this year/ early next year.
