1951 Hillman Minx Restored and Delivered

The story of this Hillman starts from the below link.

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/post-w...storation.html

I got to know Avinash through T-BHP in 2005, we have been exchanging calls over these years, but never found an opportunity to meet up due to his overseas project.

October 2011 Avinash calls up and says, ""LETS MEET UP PAVAN"" and instantly it dawned to me that, we had discussed his Hillman restoration few years back

I asked him to come over to my mechanics place on a Sunday morning.

And what happened after that will be discussed here over certain pages

Pavan Sir,

How many restorations you handle at a time? And how do you get time to earn daily bread and butter?

Wish you all the best..

re: 1951 Hillman Minx Restored and Delivered

We adopted to work with another less known painter who showed too much interest in the car, Avinash's consensus we went ahead.

Weeks passed by, and work happened at a slow pace, but the body surface started to get some nice shape.

re: 1951 Hillman Minx Restored and Delivered

Work happened at a rather slow pace over the next few weeks, and it was evident from the body language of the painter that he is no more interested in the project due to our insistence on meticulous procedure to follow.

Avinash and me still egged him on, but 2 weeks passed by and nothing much moved on the body preperation, This got us worried, But the main issue was, my regular Painter was neck deep with my other restoration and he could not afford getting another car to the already jam packed bodyshop.

Me and Avinash decided to give the existing painter one final Deadline before taking a decision, and eventually work started and it was almost close to being finished.

Poor guy must have wilted. He just realised that there is more to painting than he ever learnt from his original guru. He'll learn to improve.

Absolutely true.

On the other hand, The workmanship so far was all but SHODDY and ATROCIOUS, though i had lot of work commitments, it was becoming really impossible to monitor the project. Lot of late night visits to the workshop over the next few days kept the watchman dread the sound of my car at the gates. he he he... But still, in darkness, i found too many flaws on the surface, i made the painter realize he needs to learn, he never paid heed, and this was building up lots of pressure on me, since i had set myself a certain deadline to finish the project, and poor chap Avinash had to put up with all this.

But FORTUNATELY this painter did not keep up his deadline, and it was left for my regular painter to make way for this car under whatever circumstances we were presently in... Called up Avinash and asked him to get his Gypsy, though perplexed with the happenings, he got it and Off we towed the car over to my regular bodyshop, It was Better Late, than Never story.

At the new shop, i let Avinash give all the required tips to the team and the moment the car was there, payments and quotes exchanged and work started in Full Swing, my team accomodated 8 hours a day on the car for the next 15 days, That was a great gesture by the team which put Avinash in Shock, These guys even skipped their Friday Namaaz and Sunday holidays..

Avinash (Avi_hillman) can be seen in the 3rd and 4th Pic with the Checked shirt..

PAVAN KADAM Car Refinishing Centre

Taking a look at the second photograph, I think we see many of your ongoing projects. Are you providing 90% of their work?
Good that you have one team to work to your specifications.

Just curious: I have found that using two component epoxy primers brushed on weld joints and rusted (cleaned) areas gives very effective protection for a long time. What do you normally use?

I use the Dupont / Wurth Seam Sealers, There are very very effective.

Yes, i do provide 95% of their work. The reason is simple buddy, Most of the teams/workshops around my town

1) Keep their distance from Restorations
2) Are too time consuming
3) Dont listen to you
4) Expensive
5) Not communicative

These guys are known to me since the last 10 years, so as the saying goes ""Known Devil is better than an Unknown Angel"" i hire them to do my restorations.

This team is Simple and Straight forward. Just like me

Few reasons for the above :

1) Painter's 2yr kid is down with some illness and needs much reqd cash
2) His regular customers just finished all their RC/FC renewals and/or haven't had a accident/denting in many weeks time.
3) Painter owes money to people
4) He was going thru a bad hangover!!

By faar the worst (wrt to testing one's patience) people to deal with in my end-to-end A-Z of automobiles...

Second Reason was BANG ON

In the meanwhile Avinash exploded one more BOMB He wanted his Side valve engine to be Re-stored...The same was sent by our esteemed Karlosdeville, A Big thanks to him for the gesture.

We went around ordering for spares and within a weeks time all the spares landed from UK and off the engine went in for the Overhaul.
