Nice! The gurus might be able to shed some light on what model this bug is.

BTW, why an RAC badge for a German car??

This car is a LHD mid70's beetle which was owned by the famous movie theatres group in Trivandrum.got sold in 2011 to the present owner. The Speedo meter appears to be that of the 60s era with mph and chrome surround.
In addition to RAC badge it also sports the AA (american) badge also!!!

The car looks nice and complete. In regards to the badges both the RAC and AA are English and not American. Some history on AA badges can be read here. http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice...aa/badges.html

Cheers

I think it's a 68-69. It has the smaller rear window that came from 65-71.

This type of speedo was used as a transition part in 1968; Used only for around one year in 68 and very early 69 until stock ran out.
This had the face of the earlier speedo, but the fuel gauge from the later speedo.

Here's a progression of speedos by era. Of course, there were further minor changes in each of these eras, but that would probably be off-topic here.

The VW 1200 Euro models came with the pre 67 speedometer(without fuelgauge) till 1969(maybe even upto 73).The plastic dashes came only in US models in 1968. The headlight in this car is the vertical type with one screw rim whereas the 1968=1973 cars came with the 3 screw assymetrical headlights.By the way I dont see any photo of the rear window of the above car.??

Yes. Here's a pic.

And to add to the confusion, post 73(?) Std Bugs had the later speedo without fuel gauge!

Yes. Both US and Euro 1968s would have the 68-only speedo (earlier face with later fuel gauge); and Beetles from 1968 to 1973(?) would have a chrome speedo ring even if they were factory fitted with a plastic dash pad.

Yes. The rims are probably modern repros. I could be mistaken, but I don't think the 3-screw type is manufactured anymore.

Post#4, Pic#4. You can see the rear window through the rear quarter lights.

Re: The Red hot & rolling BUG from Trivandrum (VW Beetle)

May I suggest that the "D" plaque fitted on the bumper in the front be moved to the rear where it belongs? These were commonly used in Europe to identify the country to which the car is registered, and D is for Germany. After some sort of European Union agreement, these country identifications are now seen in the number plate on a blue background.
Apart from that, a lovely car

Cheers harit
