1957 Wolseley 6/90 Restoration Journey

In 2008 my dad had purchased the 6/90 from a lady who's Husband had passed away and the car was sitting in the garage and not running for about 25 Years. The car came with some essential cosmetics bits missing like the bumpers and grill and the engine was seized.

Initially he decided to start on opening the engine to see what has gone wrong and leading to the seizure of the engine. After which car has been parked and standing and detiorated even though she's been under a covered shed.

Some pics from when the car was brought and work was started on it by my dad. These pics were taken and uploaded by our BHPian Mr. John Milne in 2009 when he had come over to meet my father.

Re: 1957 Wolseley 6/90 Restoration Journey

Fast forward to 2021, after battling cancer for about 8months, my father passed away on 1st December.

I inherited this car and decided to restore her back to her glory. It's taken me about 2 Years with probably 6-7months of active work on the car. The challange was getting all the mechanical and cosmetic parts together from different parts of the world which I will be sharing here.

Here is how we started and took her out of her long hibernate of about 14Years in our house.

Re: 1957 Wolseley 6/90 Restoration Journey

Soon we start assessing the situation and start on repairing the body.

The engine has been out of the car from since we had got the car. We dismantled the car and however what happens unfortunately over the years, some items went missing, like the timing plate, timing chain, timing chain adjuster ,water pump, water pump pully etc

Re: 1957 Wolseley 6/90 Restoration Journey

Fast forward to another 2 months and we have finished the doors and bonnet and we start working on the main body structure in front and also start on the boot.

Parallely all the mechanical components on the suspension are cleaned, de greased and painted in Epoxy. The engine components have also been located in England and ordered.

Re: 1957 Wolseley 6/90 Restoration Journey

In the mean while, we managed to source the rubber bushes and shocks locally. The cylinder head and block were sent to the machine shop with the crank shaft and other components to determine the sizes of the bearing. We decided to reuse the old pistons as they were in decent shape with new cylinder liners and rings. Also we decided to get the block and head pressure tested and found multiple areas of corrosion which we repaired with brass welding.

We in the mean time received the engine parts from the UK.
1). Timing chain which turns out to be made In India by Rolon and I had to get it from England
2). Piston rings
3). Main and con rod bearings
4). Engine gaskets and seals
5). Water pump with pully
6). 3 push rods as these were damaged and beyond use
7). Carb Filters
8). Water outlet elbow
9). Belt
10). Brass tabs for the block and head

We are also missing mainly the following and needed to source them apart from many smaller items

1). Starter assembly
2). Distributor assembly
3). Radiator
4). Bumpers
5). Bumper over riders

Thanks Indrojith for sharing this. All of us dream of restoring an old car, most wont dare to even restore an amby let alone a rare car like yours. This is really awesome and I bow down to your commitment and the meticulous background work needed to do such a restoration. Cant wait to see it completed and restored to its long lost glory.
Too early to ask but do update us on the time and money spent on this project when its complete. Will be all ears for this thread from now on. All the best !

Re: 1957 Wolseley 6/90 Restoration Journey

Next was to weld the floors and replace the running boards. The running floors as seen in the last post were made to exact specs of the old ones. The running boards were made and then welded on. The rear boot floor was sanded down and it was also found to be in a bad shape. We decided to change the entire boot floor as well .

On the mechanical side of things, we opened and service the gearbox and all was well thankfully.

The next major area that needed attention was the rear parcel shelf and frame behind the rear seat. Also the front cowl top.

Re: 1957 Wolseley 6/90 Restoration Journey

Time had come now to take off the body from the chassis as we had seen rust on chassis when we were replacing the floor boards. The rear was fine but areas on the front side needed more attention. After the repair work, we used epoxy primer and epoxy black paint on the chassis.
