Bone Stock 1967 VW Variant

I am not a good writer, but the title thread tells all

This is a SINGLE OWNER 1967 VW Variant / Square back with a 1600cc Single port, single carb Aircooled engine.

Way back in 1967 a Young enthusiast lived his dream, along with his younger brother and his younger sister, all 3 of them were a HARDCORE VW NUT's. Their love of VW's were much more beyond what i call my passion.

They imported this very car from Germany and the journey began, their relentless love for this car never faded, every sunday all 3 of them were sleeping under the car.....??? Why. Only to keep the underbody of the car SPIC n SPAN. Which even till today remains like that.

Few years later, they also acquired a 1966 VW Beetle, even that is in great shape and now belongs to one Mr Suresh P of Bangalore who's lovingly taking care of the car. Now, it was the time of the sister to re-locate to US along with her Husband and Son, They promptly hand over the baton to the brother and leave, now the eldest of the 3, as i said was a GREAT VW FANATIC, he knew each and every bit of mechanism of the car, he took the car to a different level, Kept it even more cleaner and Better in the coming days, but as fate would have it, he breathed his last due to old age in 2005. But during his last days, inspite of his demention he still used to tell me, how to tune the car, and how the car was driven cross country with ease.

The car was passed on to his Younger brother, a Professor at Indian Institute of Science, He too kept the car BONE STOCK.

One fine day, i get a call from Professor, "KADAM, I NEED YOU TO COME DOWN, I HAVE SOMETHING TO DISCUSS"

I reach his house to get the full story, He starts.

"KADAM, I AM GETTING OLD, AND I HAVE NO ONE ELSE TO PASS ON THIS CAR TO , HIS HIGHNESS Dr Veerendra Heggade OF DHARMASTHALA HAS SHOWN KEEN INTEREST ON MY CAR, WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY"

My jaws dropped.......

Contd.............

Yes Wasif Bhai,

Continued from where i left it earlier.

I was shell shocked by professors words. Just sat there gaping.

One split moment i realized what my friend had told me.

I gathered myself and said " SIR, HAND ME OVER THE KEYS, I DONT WANT YOUR CAR TO GET CAGED FOR LIFE, WITH ALL DUE RESPECTS TO THE "DHARMAADHIKAARI". LET THE CAR GO TO A TRUE VW ENTHUSIAST THAN GO TO A MUSEUM"

And the rest is HISTORY. The VW came home and its undergoing some changes, all for making it the Best VW 1600cc Variant ever seen, and STOCK ORIGINAL.

Here are some pics of the car.

While lot of work is happening on the car, but i am not re-spraying on the Factory paint.

2 panels are re-sprayed in 1982, the rear dickey panel on the lower end (Damage caused due to spilled thinner in the rear compartment). front dickey lower portion ( spoilt while removing clay bricks)

Will update work in progress in the coming days.

Thank you Karthik.

A funny incident happened yesterday, i left for office in the Matiz, went straight to my painters place, where i had parked the Variant, i drove it to office. Evening my Mom and Wife call me and asks for a lift back home, as they had gone shopping.

I reach the place, go around and get their shopping completed. I had not informed anyone at home about the Variant, i take my kid to the parking lot, and you know how Malleshwaram is. I ask my kid to spot our car, she re-checks all the 15 -20 cars in the parking lot. She straight runs to the Variant (She's never seen the Variant) and says, "Pappa, open the door fast" She's got my lineage when it comes to VW.

Work in Progress: DIY

1) Courtesy light/cabin light was not working, had a couple of spare original VW door buttons, fixed them, changed the Bulb and the light starts working

2) Did not have side mirrors, got a German Door mirror and fitted them.

3) Reverse lights were a part of the car when it was launched, Got hold of one Original HELLA unit from WestCoast Metric, fitted it instantly.

4) White wall inserts, this is a something that i wanted to do since i had seen professors car 10 years ago.

Work scheduled for the coming days.

1) VW Mudflaps
2) Treat the rust spots on the door bottom - both sides
3) Underbody antirust coating
4) Body colored paint for the rim centres
5) Chrome the reflector pods at the rear.
6) Chrome the quarter glass frame.
7) Interior cleaning
8) Rubbing and polishing.

Keep watching this space

AaiGa ! She's looking beautiful, Pavan - from every angle ! And spot on, she's in the right hands..
How's she to drive ?
Are you planning any interior 'upliftment', or are you going to leave her 'bone stock' ?

Re: Bone Stock 1967 VW Variant

That's an awesome car. And it would be nice to preserver her just like that, the patina is to die for. You have got a looker and a original car. And Seriously I am liking the Variant more than your Beetle and Bus .

Re: Bone Stock 1967 VW Variant

Wish you happy motoring in your lovely Variant. A humble suggestion - the whitewall inserts are too jarring on this late a car, they really deserve blackwalls or at the most, thin whitewalls. The two tone wheels with cream rims and black centres will give just the right look. Those stenciled plates are just right too. Cheers.
