I think there is a Stude of similar vintage and shape with the Mallya collection, though hardtop. I remember reading it came from Travancore (?) or thereabouts. Still in (worn) original paint, I think registered MAS 8XXX. Those quaint headlamp shapes suit the car well.

The Studebaker was owned by Mr. Kamaal A. Kareem of Bareilly before it went to Delhi. Kamaal Sahab did his bit to bring the history in the limelight, and ensure he got a better price for it.

The truck in the picture (which was taken on 12.02.1948 and not 30.01.1948) is a 1947 Ford, which was designed to take Bapu's ashes to Sangam. It is kept in the Allahabad Museum and is normally taken out of its garage on the 2nd of October and 12th of February every year.

Here is a picture of the Studebaker Dictator participating in a Kanpur rally when it was still owned by Shri Kamaal A. Kareem.

Nothing to do with Godse of course, but I think the Raymond Loewy Studebakers of the middle 'fifties were one of the finest pieces of industrial design there has ever been. Nice to see the Commander again - I used to marvel at them when they were new.

Well, only slightly.

That's the pic of a brochure released by the Allahabad Museum in 2006 in honour of the 'Gandhi Smriti Vahan' which the Museum claims as one of its most valuable possessions.

See what I've managed to get hold of.

Mr. Kamaal knew fairly well that getting the car together was only as important as highlighting the history attached to it. And he even knew how to create history where there was none!
