What is wrong with people!! Don't people care for their safety anymore?

Citizens join hands to oppose cop drive mandating helmets

Guys - what do you expect in our country. We are a nation of morons when it comes to civic sense, driving discipline and any safety measures. Please see the attached article from Pune mirror that bears testimony to this. Backing this stupidity are activists, NGOs, political parties and what not.

Pardon my lack of knowledge but this has me wondering, isn't wearing a helmet a rule by the center and applicable all through out the country just like seat belts in cars? or are they governed by State governments and MCs?

How is it that we have various rules varying from city to city/state to state?

How is it that Pune is a city where tinted glasses are very common, but in Places like Mumbai has absolutely zero tolerance.

I read online that their main excuse for not wearing helmets is the slow moving traffic at 20-25 KMPH in the city. This is absolutely ridiculous!!

On a lighter not, keeping this excuse in mind, people in Bangalore shouldn't even need driving licenses, because they're literally crawling lol:

This incident is of Pune. Read someplace, Pune will be making helmets compulsory, and citizens have agreed for this.

I think you are right that it is a national rule, but implementation is in the hands of the states, who instruct their police forces accordingly. It has been clamped down on since, at least occasionally, but a politician here, some years ago, told the police not to worry the people too much about helmets. :Frustrati

Thanks for sharing! I think these idiots deserve a new thread, so here goes.

Coming up next: The same committee joins hands to oppose the mandatory seatbelt rule.

I guess administration should just let it be. If morons want to die, so be it.
What they should do instead is ensure that such people do not receive any sort of insurance if proven that they ahd not worn a helmet while on a two wheeler or a seat belt in a car!!

Wow! Just when you think, our folks cant be more idiotic, they lower the bar even further!

I sincerely hope the members of this committee die asap and remove themselves from the gene pool.

Considering how idiotic they are, I'd not be surprised if it happens soon. They sincerely deserve a Darwin award lol:.

I think it is high time insurance companies now publish full-page newspaper ads that medical coverage will be denied if rider/driver and other occupants are not wearing helmet/seatbelt. This is shocking that they can openly revolt against implementation of rules.

Passive resistance is already observed in all cities- you'll easily spots tens of riders without their helmets.

It's not just citizens who oppose it and this is actually round 2.

The exact same thing has happened back in 2005 when Helmets were made compulsory and yours truly had started to comply with the rule. The citizen body not only got the rule reversed, they also made sure that there was traffic cop harassment for those who were following the rule.

I would get stopped at the same junction by the same cop every single day to check my documents during this period. Almost got late for an exam due to this. The only way this stopped when I started giving the cop a wry smile from under the helmet as soon as I spotted her at the signal.

Let's see who wins this round, not that I care this time though.

Each time I come across news related to Helmets being made mandatory for Pune, it always reminds me of the past. No wonder when the commissioner announced implementing this Jan 2019 onward I expected similar revolt; for Pune 2 Wheeler riders and helmet never go together and I will be amused if this rule is implemented at all.

Someone should tell this opposing group that it is just the helmets that are being made mandatory while they can still continue to break other rules - Wrong side riding, signal jumping, triple riding etc. They should realise that with a helmet on, they will look more professional than now when they break these rules.

Long ago (2009-10) when I used to take State Transport Volvo to Pune by KSRTC, I always booked my seats right behind the driver and once they told how they hated the mannerisms of 2 Wheeler riders of Pune than anything else on their entire Bangalore Mumbai Schedule and said Mumbai that is only 150 kms away exhibits so much Traffic sense opposed to the majority unruly riders from the city of Peshwas.

I so wish that this rule is strictly implemented in Pune. After all I have seen this city since my first winter holiday and been watching it now too and its my wish come true to see 2 Wheeler riders wear helmets here.

Cops try to make it tough and block fuel access to riders without a helmet:

I bet fuel stations will oppose this.
As per them, it'd be none of their business to check for riding safety gear (and loss of some business too).

This is very unfortunate. My family always wears the helmet when riding a two wheeler either as the rider or as the pillion. Recently my company which is in Balewadi has also made it mandatory for two wheeler riders to be wearing helmets to enter the company premises.
