Default Lady rider nabbed by Kerala MVD for riding without helmet + rear view mirrors

Got this via the regional WhatsApp biker group;

Seems the lady shared content of her riding the Yamaha RX-Z violating a few rules like riding without a helmet, riding without RVM's etc on Instagram, and the same was reported to the MVD by several social media users via their Facebook page resulting in their swift response as seen below:

The Kerala MVD has a reputation for hunting down perpetrators and is known to spare none.

Ride Safe,
A.P.

As per the news reports, she is fined for a total amount of Rs 20500, which includes 10K for riding without proper license (she has only "2-Wheeler without Gear" License!), another 10K for riding a modified Motorcycle and finally 500 for riding without Helmet.

The most expensive instagram post she would have made till now, all for few likes!

I like this concept though, but i hope this is not limited to just bike riders but all traffic law offenders who put such videos on Social media. The proof is already existing, all that is needed is to issue an online challan. They can't even say that they did not see it as they don't have internet access, and missed it.

This could act as a good deterrent as well, and set a good example.

Wow that is a huge fine probably more than the value of the bike. I like this concept fining people based on videos. I have an apprehension that people will start masking registration numbers before posting videos soon.

Glad that the authorities could reach and penalize someone based on the online reporting, hope they maintain the same response for anyone and everyone who fail to comply with rules and regulations.

PS: Out of curiosity wanted to know if the Beacon / overhead lights in Cops vehicle (affecting vehicle dimension) and the sticker in windshield (hindering the visibility) is homologated and approved

Good job by Kerala MVD. These actions help to an extent, build trust for Police department. Knowing that police does take action, it will deter people from breaking law while riding or driving. At the same time people will hesitate to upload their stunts on web, thus saving many youngsters from getting influenced.

If they want to, they will figure that out even after masking, and in that case fine might be even more as they might be able to add couple of more sections.

I think it's the Delhi police that needs to set a couple of examples, I have seen a lot of fast videos posted from that side of the country. (no offense to anyone, but just a generic observation)

Default No credit for MVD.

There seems to be more to the story than what is being said here which is made to like a proactive MVD nabbing a violator. Read the news link below (it is in malayalam, use google translate) this seems to be an outcome of some one's fan club getting involved into cyber bullying, mass reportings. It is said that due to the number of complaints received (guess from where) MVD was compelled to act on it. It is also said on the news report that the girl is continued to being subjected to abuse on her social media by the same people.

For 1 girl breaking the law the MVD will get a 100 boys breaking the law. Hope they act on it also before they deserve any credit.

Default Re: No credit for MVD.

I am quite divided in my opinion on this action by the MVD:

What I am for?

- Law enforcement by the authorities.
- Fines that are truly a deterrent towards anyone having inclinations to go against the law.
- Proactively using social media as an alternate route to catch offenders and acting on complaints by large.

What I am against?

- Selective targeting. There would be another 100k+ people that could be caught across the state for the same offence.
- Putting out details of the offence in public domain.
- Not protecting the privacy of the offender by publishing pictures while carrying out their duties.
- Proactively enforcing cyber bullying laws by catching hold of the abusers who are belittling the girl.

Most of our police actions are knee jerk without any strategic outcomes. The force will always act tactfully with a very narrow thought process.

A couple of examples:

- Randomly conducting drives to check vehicle papers.
- The age old methodology of naka bandi.
- Acting selectively on a few complaints via twitter and ignoring by and large larger problems.

I don't think the MVD acted for getting any credit nor they have shown any gender bias. If the girl did not have posted the video,no one would notice her act. When people break the law for publicity, they should be prepared to face the consequences. The funny part is they them self create solid proof of their violation and hand it over to the authorities in a silver platter. Also if there is any video evidence of other traffic rule violations, they should punish all the offenders including owner of vehicle in case of minor.

Earlier days, whatever people did (mostly) was to please themselves/enjoy in their own way without the need or want for publicity. Nowadays, mostly (not all, as there are always exceptions to the rule) do it for showing off. Example - the fool on the R1 on another thread.

By posting it on Instagram, she invited trouble. Even if the Police normally turn a blind eye to these things (without mirrors especially), when violations like this are thrown at their faces they have to take action, otherwise it reflects badly on them. They had no choice really, if you think about it. If they don’t take strict action, then people will criticise them that even after seeing such things they are doing nothing. Perfect case of, damned if you will and damned if you won’t.

The best part of all this is the extreme stupidity displayed by people. When everything like this is in the news, social media users especially should be reading/seeing it and abstain from posting this kind of stuff. Unfortunately, idiots are increasing exponentially.

Cheers

Curious as to why this warrants a thread and a discussion. MVD catching people breaking rules is something they are tasked to do. Taking action based on public reporting is also pretty common now a days. Looks like it is sensationalized because it is a 'Lady Rider'

If as per the Malayalam article, if this is a case of the girl being targeted for something unrelated she did by using this video she posted on social media (which was a stupid thing to do and the violations deserved to be fined appropriately), then that is worrying. A new level of cyber bullying.
