TVS working on camera-based helmet reminder for 2-wheelers

Future TVS bikes and scooters could get a camera-based system that would detect if the rider has worn a helmet.

Vinay Harne, President of New Product Development at TVS, has revealed that the company is developing a camera-based helmet reminder system. If a rider is found to be without a helmet, the system will flash a message on the digital console to remind the rider to wear a helmet.

Harne also revealed that the camera-based helmet reminder is under development on a number of models and will be introduced soon. He went on to state that TVS is working on several rider safety systems, including advanced rider assistance systems, as well as early warning and automatic braking systems.

This would be a precursor for Helmet mandation, and flashing a message on the console is just the starting point. This is to show the law makers that such a thing can easliy deter helmetless riding, if the vehicle does not even start. However, for the AI based camera sensors to become perfect, it would take a year or two of training the model.

If the car doesn't start without wearing seatbelts, then you would need a similar implementation for two wheelers.

The problem at hand is to recognize a proper "helmet" and not a cap or some typical Jugad that we Indians are quite capable of. And then the next step is to continously monitor, not just at the first start of the vehicle. In a country where implementation of helmet rule is city dependent, this is not going to work.
