The thing is these jackets dont guarantee life saving technology or such. It "COULD" save u'r life though depending on the incident , it'll atleast reduce the chances of injury.

Thats true, but thats true for regular jackets no ? so its has an added quality. I totally like this idea. Its like extra padding in critical areas without too much weight ! They do say that this could be put to use next in Moto GP where money should not be a constraint. They use kangaroo skin jackets in moto gp for their lower thickness and lighter weight for the same strenght of regular leather. I hope they go this next step !

These motorcycle airbags are being used in WSB I think. One of the riders crashed in an actual race and the bag deployed. I can't remember where I saw it.

I'm sure it can help keep bruises away & in minor velocity crashes , but not quite sure whether it can protect higher speed impact, it's still not a cage...Even a bullet proof vest disperses the impact over a larger area, one still feels a solid punch...

Also, i think this is a great idea, and would love to see it being used and developed futher, especially in 2-wheeler motorsports. Im not very up to date with that scene, but i believe they are using them for some smaller championships - it is a requirement though? Its almost like an inflatable HANS for two-wheelers.

A few areas which i think could use some improvement :
1. The airbags only inflate when the rider is seperated from the bike (chord gets pulled). This makes the airbags a little less effective IMO as there sometimes is impact (with the ground or another object) before the rider seperates from the bike.
2. Its not a chemical explosion, so it takes a while for the bags to inflace (0.5seconds apparently), which im guessing is longer than if it was a chemical explosion like car airbags.
3. The pressure in the bags - my guess is that the design could be improved if there was more pressure. I am unsure of how capable 1 CO2 cartridge is (how many psi). This factor could also be limiting the size of the "airbag" and therefore areas to which it offers protection. Having a 2nd CO2 cartridge would complicate the trigger mechanism slightly, but would definitely be a possibility.

A great invention for sure, and hope to see it being showcased a lot more in 2-wheeler motorsports.

well first i think once a rider has a fall be it small or big depends on how lucky you get, i mean about the damage to the rider/jacket, and the jacket ends up saving you from the bruises for sure.

and after that i dont think many might use if for either sentimental reasons or damage, agreed gendarmee. And the refill will only be useful if the jacket does not suffer much damage.

second thing the technology can indeed be made better and yet this jacket does save life based on the crash one has, imagine in situations where the bike falls over the rider they might not save the rider.

and coming to the cost, instead of buying 2 jackets for 300-350$ one can go for one of these. a rider who buys jackets this pricey would have more than is what i expect( imo)!

well at the end of the day jackets like these are at least available for protection right?

Biker Air Bags

Hello Guys

Saw this item in the "Institute of Advanced Notorists Magazine" Summer 2009 issue.

If this can be there for everyday use it would be good but rather cumbersome for the average climate in India.

Best Regards and Drive/Ride safe

14,000 rpm,

The info I had posted was regarding development by Dainese one of the specialist and leading riding accessories manufacturer in the world.

Their company info link is given below

Motorbike - English

As per the news item, the Dainese product is to hit the market soon.

Hit Air Australia is also having the similar product as per info supplied by a.e.g.

Send either of them if you are interested and usually these type of reputed companies will oblige you with a reply and information.

Take care and Drive/Ride safe

"Discard safety gear after a crash" applies to everything including a helmet. If a helmet touches, or hits the ground in a crash, one should not wipe the dust off and reuse it. Never know what internal faults/cracks have developed in them. Cracked helmet may be better than no helmet, but why take a chance when your head is at stake :-)

Re: Riding Jackets with Airbags !!

Here's something somewhat related: An "invisible" bicycle helmet

Riding Jackets with Airbags !!-capture.jpg

Works on a similar principle, where the helmet inflates up from a collar around the neck. Details are still vague.

I wonder if:
a) It will trigger at all the right times (unlike the airbag jacket which has a tie-trigger this will rely entirely on detected motion)
b) Will it trigger at all the wrong times?
c) Will it inflate firm enough to truly provide as much protection as most bicycle helmets?

Re: Riding Jackets with Airbags !!

There is an update on a newer and better product by Helite

Demo video:

Also a real video

The company claims the product provides the highest level of safety for motorcyclists with their patented Turtle Airbag Vest. Faster deployment time less than 0.1s (company claims 80ms). This jacket is reusable for lifetime as it does not involve any underlying canister explosion to inflate the bag.

HELITE Turtle vest provides a rigid neck brace, as well as firm support to the spine and back, chest, rib and kidneys, and even hip and pelvic protection. The Hi-Viz yellow is made for the best visibility during the day, and the silver 3M reflective strips can be seen from a distance when hit with light.

HELITE airbag protection can be worn by a rider, as well as a passenger.
