ARAI setting up crash testing facility at Pune

Saw in the DNA today about ARAI setting up a modern vehicle crash testing facility near Pune. Pls find the link which gives the details, the title however is incorrect as it says travelling to Pune will be safer.

Thanks to crash testing facility, travelling in a car to be safer in Pune - Pune - DNA

The facility is going to come up at Chakan which is now an automobile hub. The services to be offered are full frontal crash, offset crash, rear impact, pole impact, dynamic rollover, sled facility, child restrain test and pedestrian impact test facility which uptil now was limited only the full frontal crash test. Hope this will benefit the car manufacturers.

There's no news about the facility setup in the ARAI website.

This statement from the link seems incorrect as Tata Engineering also has a crash testing facility of their own. Here is the link to the source, on the last but one paragraph it states:

To their credit, however, Tata Engineering is the only manufacturer with a crash-test facility of their own.

In fact, the passive safety testing labs (Crash testing) are to be set up in Three Locations:

1. ARAI - Pune
2. GARC - Chennai
3. iCAT - Manesar

You can know about all the facilities comping up from NATRIP (National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project) here: :: Welcome to NATRiP ::

You are right. Tata has the only crash test facility in India among private players.

Though, ARAI Pune has an facility, it is outdated which is under total revamp now. This is due to delays from the Government in enforcing crash test regulations as mandatory. Check here: https://www.araiindia.com/facilities...ive_safety.asp

Re: ARAI setting up crash testing facility at Pune

AFAIK ARAI had started the installation work for crash test lab way back in 2007 or 2008. They had imported machines from Europe and commissioning of machines was under progress. This facility was being set up in ARAI Homologation Lab.

Tata Motors were the first to set up a crash test lab in India. Correct me if I am wrong. As per my knowledge the first vehicle to be crash tested in house in Tata Motors was Tata Safari.

Re: ARAI setting up crash testing facility at Pune

The ARAI crash test facility at Chakan has been completed, and is now operational.

Quote:
The crash test infrastructure which is a part of Passive Safety Lab at ARAI’s Chakan campus incorporates electric AC motor drive with a payload capacity of 3.5 tonnes. The drive can propel vehicles to up to 80 kmph. Frontal crash test can be conducted between 48.5 – 53 kmph while the side impact collision test is conducted at 50 kmph (impact pole speed). Moving and deformable barriers are used.

In order to capture the underbody view of crash tests for later analysis, ARAI has equipped its lab with two camera pits measuring 6m x 3m x 3m, one each at full frontal and frontal offset testing facilities. High speed cameras with frame rate of 2000 per second are employed to record the tests. Lighting systems in the facility are capable of illuminating the area with an intensity of up to 1,50,000 Lux.

Crash test facility of ARAI also includes static rollover test rig and deceleration test sled (to conduct various tests such as seat belts, seats, door locks, luggage retention, etc.) with a max speed rating of 80 kmph. ARAI employs 50% hybrid dummies in its crash tests.

Lovely. Hope they will also start sharing videos of the tests on youtube, and the results of the tests they undertake on the website without needing an RTI application.

Re: ARAI setting up crash testing facility at Pune

Can someone do a quick compare of the tests conditions here vs EuroNCAP, IIHS etc. ? I'm very interested to see if they're comparable or if we're getting watered down tests...

Or please point me to a relevant post if I've missed it.

Thanks!

Re: ARAI setting up crash testing facility at Pune

That's a good thing to start with. Hope this makes our upcoming vehicle more safer. Safety has always been an issue with entry level cars in this India. Manufacturers doesn't provide the cars with adequate safety equipments. This crash test facility brings new hopes to safety of our vehicles. Drive safe. Cheers.
