Default Record-breaking safety rating for Volvo V40 in the Euro NCAP. EDIT: Now the XC60 too

Volvo lives to its core value of being the safest car! Record breaking NCAP safety rating for the V40.

The all-new Volvo V40 has received the top rating of five stars in the Euro NCAP collision test. The overall result is the best ever recorded by the institute.

Separate tests are carried out in four different sub-categories, which are then ranked to produce an overall grade. The four categories are adults occupant protection, child protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist.

It is not only the overall result that is record-high. The all-new Volvo V40's protection for adults for was also the best result ever recorded in a test, no less than 98 percent. During the development of the all-new Volvo V40, the goal was to build in the same safety level as in larger cars. The holistic approach, a strong structure and systems such as the WHIPS whiplash protection system form the basis for the excellent result.

In the safety assist category, the Volvo V40 scores maximum points. "The new Volvo V40 was launched as the most intelligent and the safest car in its segment, and it is truly packed with active safety systems such as auto brake, Pedestrian Detection to shield pedestrians, Lane Keeping Aid which helps the driver stay within his or her lane, and BLIS which helps the driver detect vehicles in the offset rear 'blind spot'

In the pedestrian protection category too the Volvo V40 sets a new record. One important factor here is the innovative, unique pedestrian airbag. Sensors in the front of the car detect any contact with a pedestrian. A pyrotechnical charge releases the bonnet hinges and elevates the bonnet with the help of an airbag. The inflated airbag's cushioning effect combined with the increased distance to the hard components in the engine compartment help protect the pedestrian's head in any impact. The Euro NCAP description of the system says, among other things, that "the system worked well, the bonnet offering good protection in all areas likely to be struck by a pedestrian's head, making the V40 the first car to score maximum points in this area."

Not surprising. The V40 is getting rave reviews from the media – for safety innovations and driving characteristics. And another first from Volvo – pedestrian airbag!

And if I am correct, this is the first V from Volvo which is a proper hatchback and not an estate version of the S.

Not that I know of, when Airbags and ABS are offered optional here, what else we can expect?

Cheers!

If only had they worked on the branding part. This is one car maker that deserves a standing ovation for sticking to its value.

Then there is a long long way for the Indian car industries to go! I guess even the companies are not planning to invest any money in R&D about the safety of the people both inside and outside of the cars.

I ve seen a picture of the V$0 with an inflated passenger airbag. It doesnt cover the glass completely. What happens if the head of a pedestrian hits the uncovered portion?

Should be the same result as how it will be without the airbag. Covering the glass fully will not be a viable option as it will hamper the driver's vision.

Awesome! The V40 looks very attractive as well.

Good to see Volvo putting great effort to preserve their USP. Well Done!

Konichuva vb-san, I understand the issue with driver visibility, but when a pedestrian is hit by a car(avg height 5'5, his/her head would definitely hit the glass. I know that there are a lot of variables involved, but its just thought that occurred to me

Volvo demonstrates its core value- SAFETY, betters its own record.

In the just concluded Euro NCAP results , the XC60 becomes the the safest car ever tested by the crash safety body.

Euro NCAP:

Quote:
The new Volvo XC60 becomes the best all-round performer of 2017 so far and matches the performance of the XC90, tested in 2015. With an almost-perfect 98 percent in adult occupant protection and with an array of driver assistance features, the XC60 demonstrates the levels of safety available on top-end models.

Quote:
The XC60 scored 98% for adult occupant protection, 87% for child occupant protection, 76% for pedestrian safety and 95% for safety assistance systems, the highest results of any car since the larger Volvo XC90 scored 97%, 87%, 72% and 100% when it was tested in 2015.

Apparently in the UK, there has not been any reported death in a Volvo V40

https://www.carthrottle.com/post/if-...d-mazda-cx-30/

Who would have thought that a mid size Mazda crossover would beat a Volvo to become the safest car in the world.

Quote:
Based on crash test data, the Mazda CX-30 is the safest car you can have an accident in. The crossover scored 99 per cent in the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) segment of its Euro NCAP trial, the highest rating ever given by the organisation.

This means the CX-30 has beaten not one but two cars from Volvo, with the V40 and XC60 being among only a handful of cars to have achieved an AOP score of 98 per cent. ‘Safer than a Volvo’ seems like a pretty big selling point, no?

The CX-30 was given maximum points in the full-width barrier, side-impact and side pole tests. The latter is billed as Euro NCAP’s “most severe” test, intended to simulate a car leaving the road and hitting a tree or pole.
Who would have thought that a compact crossover from Mazda would beat a Volvo to become the safest car in the world.
