[Misguided]

Hi All,

2 days back, my colleague lost her husband in a horrific road accident.

Considering its a new Honda CRV, its hard to believe that airbags did not not deflate after getting deployed & resulted in drowning of both front seat occupants.

Since last 2 days, I am thinking what they could have differently to survive.
Emergency tool kits, Seat-belt cutter, Knife, Hammer are few things which we know could have been useful in this situation but frankly speaking I havn't seen much awareness about the importance of keeping these things in car.

Hence I am starting this topic to seek advise from fellow bhpians for all readers benefits so that we are better prepared to face such situations.

Really sorry about your colleague's loss. Unfortunately, such accidents do happen where there is absolutely nothing one can do, be it victim or witness.. hope she is able to cope with her loss. It is sad to see people following all safety norms (seatbelt and airbags) and still not making it out of an accident.

If you don't mind me going in the nitty-gritty, the news mentions the rear bench occupants were able to break the windows. how exactly? Did they have some sort of blunt instrument, or was it just hands and feet?

Personally, I ALWAYS keep a swiss army knife on person (i.e. in the bag) for such freak screnarios.

I doubt you can do anything in such bizzare incidents or can ever be better prepared. This reminds me that " one cannot cheat death". If it has to happen, it will. All you can do it probably drive better and always be in control of your car and its surroundings.

Actually car was overturned after hitting pavement & rear glass got broken due to impact.

Really sorry about the loss.

However, there's no input in the report as to the state of the airbags.
It's not as if there are tiny pin holes for deflation in airbags, they're ruddy big ones. Unless there was some massive QA foul up at Honda..........

I really don't think that article has enough information, accuracy or technical expertise to come to a conclusion that the airbags or even the seat-belts were at fault.

Personally, i doubt its possible for airbags to be responsible for this. I can think of several other reasons for things to have ended this tragically, but I don't think there's any point speculating now.
