I remember seeing some designs/guidelines in the rdh instructions book...guess if its good enough for rallying it should be good enough. Not sure if its over engineered though for 'regular' cars.

Yes it was a MH registered vehicle. But last week another rallyits from city itself was stopped and ticked off for driving a modded vehicle.

The important point is that the roll cages are not only designed for side roll but also frontal impact. And they work. Speaking from personal experience of going head on - with combined speed in excess of 100kmph - in a Zen in to a oncoming bus head on....and yet typing away here.

1. Hard tops would not save you from a rollover if it does not have a roll cage built into it. It will crumble.

(It is not really a Roll cage, rather, a ROPS).

2. I don't think you need FIA specification roll cages for normal usage where the car is not going to do multiple rollovers at high velocity like in rallying. But the designs can be used as a reference. (Even a single Roll hoop mounted to the frame can go a long way in protecting occupants)

3. The roll cages and ROPS are always said to be SECONDARY protection. The PRIMARY protection is still the Seatbelt. So, If you don't wear a seatbelt, the Roll cage would be useless.

That is certainly news, my Thar has been stopped in Chandigarh, where my standard sized tires have been dourly looked at, and questioned that they might be peeking out of the fender flares, lacking any evidence, I was let go off.

With a hard top on, getting away from a challah in Chandigarh might seem difficult!

What would be the diameter / NB size for the rolls cage bars?

What would be the design inputs for the roll cage?

Quick question if someone reads this, owns a Thar BS4 and lives in Chandigarh.
I am thinking to buy this used thar which has following Mods
1. Its registered as a soft top on RC but is modified to have a hard top(made of fibre)
2. The front bumper is replaced by Iron bumper
3. Bench seats were removed and replaced by normal seat. So car is 5 seater now

What level of problem will I face if I drive it in Chandigarh.?
