This has always been a traffic menace - rods, bars, and other dangerous stuff lurking & hanging hazardously behind the carriers & trucks. Earlier the Section 93 of CMVR 1989, allowed goods vehicles to carry poles or rods or indivisible load upto one metre beyond the rear most point of the motor vehicle; and no surprise this provision was widely misused.

Finally a welcome move, the government has banned vehicles from carrying rods, pipes or any protruding material beyond the body frame.

If this is implemented strictly, this is surely going to make our roads safer.

Finally a step in the direction towards safer roads. They must also make it mandatory to have functional tail lights and have reflective tape around the body so the vehicles are visible in the dark. So many accidents occur because of parked trucks and lorries that completely merge into the darkness.

My concern is this rider in this news.

The cutting edge level police at Constabulary needs to be made aware of this law and more importantly, the easy money that they could now make and let the culprits pass through is something that needs a strong check.

I hope that the respective traffic police departments advertise this pictorially for wider dissemination and control the menace.

Yes, it is indeed a welcome move. Sincerely hoping that the transport department and cops don't compromise and allow this any more. For those of us who drive on NH would have occasions to experience how serious is this issue. This is a good step.

Many times, these protruding rods are hard to pick by the eye if they are in the same plane. Even if one picks it, it is tough to estimate the correct distance from them because of the optical illusion it creates. And that, can be deadly.

The big thing in India is not laws but implementation. Heck efficient (in their own warped way) forces like CTP actually challaned an Alto because it was carrying a cycle on a good cycle rack on which the tyres unfortunately projected beyond the width of the car. It was well debated on the internet but the law was on CTP's side. I'm surprised they took so long to sort out something so obvious.

Now we start and pray that it is STRICTLY implemented by the time our children grow up and start driving.

I have my doubts about how well it is going to be implemented, a few 100 bucks and the cops will look the other way. However, on our part we need to take a snap of such vehicles and post it on the traffic police website as well as website of local dailies, this makes it difficult for the cops to look the other way until of course they device a new way, which our innovative cops will do...

Is this with immediate effect or this was to go through the rigmarole process of getting passed in parliamentary sessions? Saw today morning while on way to office a truck carrying steel rods protruding beyond the truck chassis on the climb near IIT market signal. No indication lamps, non functional tail lamps and the truck was a perfect recipe for disaster. Add to that few budding F1 drivers were trying to overtake from the wrong side.

It might get enforced in Cities, but 2-tier, 3-tier towns won't enforce anything. Most violating vehicle owners will be pals with the cops, and nothing happens.

Difficult to see it getting implemented as the history suggests. Even prior to this new rule, the permissible limit was one metre protrusion; but it was not a rare site to see protruding rods and other stuffs almost sweeping the roads. Hence, the implementation of new rule at the actual level looks difficult.

However, it would have been a great leap forward towards road safety.

Though this should have been implemented much earlier, however no doubt this is a welcome move on the part of the Gov. The implementation however lies in the hands of the state police department and very soon they will turn this into another excuse to earn more money. In my opinion the consignor and the consignee should also be penalised for violation in the future, then only this practice will come to a stop.

Ultimately, it will come to down to practicality. Governments all over India are used to creating restrictive laws without giving an alternative. Such laws only makes enforcement authorities richer.

How are people supposed to transport steel rods longer than the truck bed? If there is no other way, the trucks will continue the practice at the additional cost bribing the cops.

Huh, implementation of this law is very much questionable. In Pune most transport agencies belong to goons and local politicians. No number plates, no rear lights, leaking tankers, overspeeding, road rages are very common WRT to the trucks plying in the city.

And shameless traffic wardens, police and other authorities dont have a 1% guts to object or stop them
