Mercedes-Benz has announced a recall for more than 10 lakh cars due to a faulty steering column component. The part is prone to failure and may cause the driver side airbag to deploy.

According to the car maker, cars sold in the UK (4 lakh), US (5 lakh) and Germany (1 lakh) have been affected. Cars built between November 2011 and July 2017 have been recalled and include the A-Class, B-Class, C-Class, E-Class and CLA sedans. GLA, GLC, GLK and some V-Class models have also been recalled.

Mercedes-Benz told that a steering column module spring is found to break. This causes the airbag warning light to come on. Further, faulty wiring could cause the driver side airbag to deploy.

Owners are being advised to visit their nearest Mercedes-Benz dealer should the airbag warning light come on. Owners of the affected cars are being notified about the recall, which will reportedly begin in the coming weeks depending on the availability of spare parts. Mercedes claims that the repairs will take about an hour.

Some of the recalled models are also sold in the Indian market and hence it is likely that the Indian models could be affected as well. That said, Mercedes-Benz is yet to issue a recall of the said models in India.

We usually park all the international recalls in the other thread.

However, we'll keep this thread independent as Indian Mercedes' might be affected by this recall too.

Because of frequent airbag issues, I wonder if it makes sense to hold on to cars (all brands) for more than 5 or 6 years or buy very old pre-owned airbag equipped cars.

Looks like there are too many variables that can go wrong at production level that can cause problems later.

Even buying 5-6 year old vehicles poses a risk, if airbags are faulty.
In the past, recalls have been advised on those old models as well.
