IIHS Top Safety Picks, 2019

The IIHS Top Safety and Top Safety + picks are out for 2019. Let's take a look at how IIHS themselves describe the criteria for selection :

Quote:
To qualify for 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, as well as an acceptable or good rating in the passenger-side small overlap front test. It also must earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and an acceptable or good headlight rating.

Right off the start, I can see that Hyundai and Kia have done exceptionally well with most of their lineup making it into all the respective categories and many into TSP+. Audi is next with almost all their cars making it to TSP category and one into TSP+. VW is absent completely from the line-up. Subaru also has a lot of their cars in the TSP+ category which is impressive, while Toyota has only 3 cars in the list and all 3 are sedans, their SUV/MUV lineup is completely missing. Genesis has earned TSP+ for all their cars i.e G90, G80 and G70, and same goes for Mercedes except for a very curious absence of the S-Class.

To make things a bit more interesting, let me put a brief list of cars/platforms that are sold in India, that have made it to the IIHS TSP/TSP+ list (though that, in no way shall indicate a similar safety spec/grade in India, as ALL Indian models lack electronic, autonomous safety overrides like LKAS, LCA and auto-braking), and also the light/illumination has to be of a certain high standard to even be considered for TSP+.

Hatchbacks :
Kia Rio 2019 (Grand i10 Platform) - TSP
Hyundai Accent 2019 (Hyundai Verna) - TSP

D Segment :
Kia Forte 2019 (Elantra platform) - TSP+
Hyundai Elantra 2019 - TSP+
Toyota Corolla - TSP
Nissan Kicks - TSP

Executive Segment -
Toyota Camry - TSP+

Midsize Luxury
Audi A3 - TSP
Audi A4 - TSP
Mercedes Benz C Class - TSP +

Large Luxury
Audi A6 - TSP+
BMW 5 Series - TSP+
Mercedes E class - TSP+

Small SUVs
Hyundai Tucson - TSP
Hyundai Kona (incoming) - TSP+
Honda CRV - TSP

Luxury SUVs -
BMW X3 - TSP+
MB GLC - TSP+
MB GLE Class - TSP+
