The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) plans to introduce cashless medical treatment to all injured accident victims across India within the next 3-4 months.

The amended Motor Vehicle Act 2019 has provisions for free and cashless medical treatment to injured victims. According to Anurag Jain, Secretary, MoRTH, some states have implemented it, but the ministry now plans to roll out the scheme across India.

“It is envisioned for providing access to cashless trauma care treatment for road accident victims at the nearest appropriate hospital in the country, in accordance with the Supreme Court ruling, and by drawing its power from the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act 2019,” Jain said. “Such cashless treatment shall be extended to road accident victims, including during the golden hour,” he added.

It is part of the government’s strategy based on 5E’s of road safety. These include Education, Engineering, Enforcement and Emergency Care.

Bravo to Gadkari for bringing positive reforms one after the other like this, hope it will be implemented soon. He has given great highways and this is another step in case of the worst especially for motorcyclists. The response time has to be fast though, given helplines do not work sometimes or evacuations are very late, if there is as localities tend to take photos, videos, looting the guy if he’s badly injured and then any ambulance etc is called.

This is good news. If only the govt can strengthen the first 3 Es, the no of road accidents can be minimized to a greater extent.

However I think this will culminate into a hiking of the Third party Liability premiums next year.

Re: Govt. to offer cashless medical treatment to accident victims

Government plans cashless treatments equals to government will send a mass notice (read threatening letter) to all hospitals and doctors to oblige! Government will also not mention anything, or actively pursue the issues related to subsequent dues clearance.
Government will not protect the healthcare personnel from violent repercussions of the highly volatile family members, as they usually do when faced with life and death scenarios!

I am all in for immediate care to such victims, and do so regularly as part of my profession as a surgeon. But I can see being very difficult to deal with if a proper framework covering all the fine points isn't formulated.
