Bharat NCAP to announce crash test results this month

According to a media report, Bharat NCAP is likely to publish the crash test results for the first batch of cars before the end of December 2023.

Mahmood Ahmed, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, has revealed that the BNCAP program is on track, and the government is hoping to share the results this week or before the end of the year.

"Government's BNCAP program is on track. We are hoping to share the results as soon as possible, which could be this week or before the end of the year," Ahmed said.

Bharat NCAP was launched in August this year and was officially rolled out on October 1, 2023. The crash test program is based on the Automotive Industry Standard AIS 197. Vehicles under the M1 category that can carry up to 8 passengers, in addition to the driver and gross weight not exceeding 3.5 tonnes will qualify for this program. It will also cover imported cars, CNG and electric vehicles.

Tata Motors was the first company to apply for the BNCAP rating. The Harrier and Safari will be among the first of three dozen cars that will be evaluated under the new program.

Re: Bharat NCAP to announce crash test results this month

The cat will be soon out of its bag. Mahmood Ahmed, Additional Secretary and his Ministry, MoRTH also need to make a minimum of four or more stars mandatory for all such cars qualified for testing, for the BNCAP. Only such four and five star rated cars need to be sold in our market. The car buying public is though very gradually understanding implications of buying, owning and using the ZERO and ONE Star cars, but a greater majority of them are blissfully ignorant of these safety ratings. As such, with the ignorant buyers' blessings, we have these TOP car makers reaching the top, with portfoliios of best selling models.

What the developed countries made mandatory some 20-25 years ago is not yet the law and the norm here. These so called TOP carmakers beef up the safety ratings of their cars to sell in the West, but are continuing to sell their unsafe cars here, taking best advantages of loopholes in the system.

Personally I think an easier solution would be to link lower scores to higher tax slabs or insurance rates. I doubt the govt will get much opposition from a move that gets them and other private players more revenue

There is an opportunity for insurers here, provided IRDA agrees. Higher premiums for high risk cars.

If done, this will have the opposite of what it intends to achieve. Most low scoring cars are from the price conscious entry level segment and already many don't renew their insurance after 1st year as they see it as an additional burden forced upon them by cops. If the insurance price is increased for them, many more people will simply stop buying insurance.

While I hate the whole notion of many manufacturers purposefully making inferior cars for India, people should have the choice to decide how much they value their life. No matter how unsafe the car for the occupants, it should still be allowed to be sold BUT with their safety standards clearly displayed on every advert. Whether 5 stars or 0 stars, it should be displayed on all cars in the showroom in bold letters similar to how some countries mandate fuel efficiency stickers on the windshields of display models.

Do we have a list of cars which have been submitted to the BNCAP. I see Tata, Mahindra, Maruti, Hyundai, Kia and Toyota in the manufacturer's list.

Re: Bharat NCAP to announce crash test results this month

I wish the BNCAP are not lenient like the other Govt laws here. Putting a stricter norm can match with the international standards thereby making more highly safe cars for our people.

The recent 0 star of Scorpio N at Australian NCAP is another example (I know it is because of ADAS and tech). But we should get those levels of high standards as well. We are marching towards a developed country as well. Let we people also get those highly standard and safety rated cars.

Re: Bharat NCAP to announce crash test results this month

Expect some surprises.

As per the procedure:

(ii) Ensure random selection of sample vehicles from the manufacturing premises of
the vehicle manufacturer, importer, or authorized dealer of the
manufacturer/ importer as per request received by the respective vehicle
manufacturer for star rating;
(iii) The manufacturer of the vehicle, thus selected, shall be asked to transport the
vehicle to the Testing Agency identified by the Committee

https://uat.bncap.in/wp-content/uplo...-Procedure.pdf

Compared to EuroNCAP:

Up to 4 cars are needed for an assessment by Euro NCAP. If a car model is already on sale, Euro NCAP will generally buy cars from dealers, in the same way that consumers do. Cars are bought anonymously, either from a single dealer or from several. Once the cars are at the test laboratory, the manufacturer is informed of the vehicle identification numbers (VINs) and are asked to confirm the specification.

Perhaps the results are "uncomfortable" to publish without some backdoor parleys.

I don't see any other reason for not publishing the results. It's been over a month now and we have not got the results. This might just be a way To stop global ncap ratings for indian cars by announcing your own ncap and then not declaring the results. Maruti conspiracy?
