Bigger speed signs to be installed every 10 km on all highways, expressways

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued new guidelines for signage on expressways and national highways. The new rules will come into force in February 2025.

Bigger speed signs to be installed every 10 km on all highways, expressways-6_54.jpeg

As per the fresh guidelines, agencies must install larger, more prominent speed limit signs every 10 km. ‘No parking’ signs must be placed every 5 km along with signage displaying emergency helpline numbers.

Besides this, the government has also mandated the installation of directional signage for heavy and slow-moving vehicles, guiding them to stay in the left lane. Signs must be placed at least 2 km before exit points on expressways and highways. Also, signs indicating roadside amenities must be placed 5 km, 2 km, and 1 km before the location.

The new guidelines aim to guide drivers more effectively and help them make informed decisions with clear and more frequent road signs.

Should place them really low at road level so we can read the signs simultaneously as we watch out for the potholes.

Yeah, right! Since when did Indian drivers obey traffic signage unless accompanied by the certainty of penal action in the form of fines & challans? This would be as fruitful as showing a "No Animals Allowed on Expressway" sign to a herd of cows, buffaloes, or nilgai. If they don't obey those signs, make the signs 10x bigger, place them 50 metres apart, and hope for the best!

May be while we are at it, we can take this opportunity to also put boards like "No driving wrong way", "No cutting lanes" etc and hopefully things will improve.

This sign should be put up at the back of each regular sign.

They should ensure to set ridiculous speed limits on the highways. Like 90 KMPH at one spot and something like 40 KMPH very next to it.

Regardless of how sattirical one can be, I think these bigger sign boards will surely help.

For Example, If there are no parking sign's put at every 5KM unlike nothing that exists today, it will surely help avoid a few who park on the sides. Today, their excuse is that they have not seen any sign, and that excuse will be cut-out.

If one were to look at the # of fatalities of cars ramming into parked trucks at night, I would imagine that this % will come down.

And the fines for crossing the NH 110 speed or 80 (if crossing any city in between) would be fined 1000 rs.

This would be over and above the huge toll tax that's been increasing every 6 months.

For seamless experience : these fines would be automatically deducted from our fastag balance which obviously would be linked to our savings account.

This is what we work for : for the govt.
This is why we have chosen this govt : find newer ways to empty our pockets.

I completely agree with this. Any efforts to enhance road safety for users should be appreciated.

This will certainly help prevent situations where drivers stop in the middle of the road to ask for directions or become distracted by Google Maps, often due to a lack of proper road signs and markings. Some even don't hesitate to reverse into oncoming traffic, putting themselves and others at risk.

Re: Bigger speed signs to be installed every 10 km on all highways, expressways

Good. But it will be more helpful to have more cameras and if offenders for other reasons can be fined more heavily than over speeding.

Starting from those travelling in opposite direction (biggest danger), to cutting lanes without indication when a vehicle is coming behind or opposite and for not obeying traffic signals at highway intersections at all times. Plus the two wheeler hazards who travel in middle or right lanes at 40kmph in a high speed highway.

Though I very much respect road rules and speed limits,
A Mercedes traveling at 120kmph on a 100kmph highway is less likely to cause an accident than a lorry changing from left to right lane at 30kmph completely ignoring a car travelling behind at 80kmph(within speed limit).

If you want to fine Rs. 1000 for those crossing speed limits, please fine 5k - 10k for those who willingly endanger others knowing it’s wrong, especially signal breakers and wrong side drivers.

But wishful thinking, knowing nothing is going to change much.

There are already best practices across the world. Why can't just do the same here as a start instead of band aid works?

Great move in warning motorists!

As a step further, need act on errant motorists with surveillance and technology. Seeing a signboard as a museum piece has been the bane of our driving culture.

Who's going to cover the cost for this unnecessary expense? Surely news for increased toll rates (yet again) is on its way!

One more option - Calculate the average speed between consecutive toll booths and if the average speed is higher than the speed limit, fine can be imposed that is 5 times the over speeding ticket (since average speed is higher than the speed limit, one has to drive consistently over the speed limit for longer duration).
NHAI is busy counting the money collected via toll that they forgot to implement this, otherwise this is simpler to implement. Total toll revenue stood at Rs 27,637.64 crore in 2019-20, Rs 27,923.80 crore in 2020-21, Rs 33,907.72 crore in 2021-22, Rs 48,028.22 crore in 2022-23 and Rs 64,809.86 crore in 2023-24. (source)

I think this has already been implemented, on some portion if not all, on the Samruddhi expressway.
