"It's a big deal when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety honors a vehicle with a Top Safety Pick designation, and now the 2012 Audi A6 and 2012 Volkswagen Passat can join the big deal club. The IIHS gave both VW Group vehicles the award after they received top scores in stringent front, side and rear impact testing. Both vehicles also feature electronic stability control; a must for any Top Safety Pick winner.

The last check mark any Top Pick needs is a top score in roof strength testing. Honda, Volvo models get high marks in new overlap crash tests.

The 2013 Honda Civic, the first small car to achieve a "good" rating in the institute's new small overlap test, was fortified with the second generation of Honda's advanced compatibility body (ACE II) structure. The two- and four-door models both earned the rating

Volvo responded to the small overlap test by updating the XC60 luxury sedan's airbag algorithm to ensure that the side curtain airbag deploys during such collisions.

Wow. Wow. Wow.

This is one thing I have been thinking about ever since I read about recent accidents involving Mercs that were crushed by oncoming trucks. Shouldn't roof be very very strong? Good to see that this is a mandatory criterion - at least in the US.

BTW, what about all these cars with sun/moon roofs? Are their roofs compromised in terms of strength?

Chevrolet Sonic wins Top Safety ranking for 2015 by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The Sonic’s improvements in Crash Protection, by employing changes in the front end structure, door sill and door pillar for the midyear 2015 model were enough to give it a “good rating”. It also features 10 standard airbags, including knee air bags for the driver and front passenger.
