You should be able to make it to Kumbakonam by 12. That opens up a plethora of options within the city.

Dont know anything on the bypass. But Sara Regency is close by which you can check out. Its good place to stay with a decent attached restaurant.

But will others comment if anything better is around.

Ramas Cafe Veg on Attur bypass. Beyond that nothing on Chidambaram/Kumbakonam bypass depending on which way you are going

Thanks everyone for your inputs. Taken the route suggested by you folks. Salem- Attur - Veppur - Vridhachalam - Jayakondam - Gangai Konda Chozhapuram (excellent temple to visit enroute) - Anaiakarai- Mayiladuthurai.

Had breakfast in Salem at 8:15 am and reached Mayiladuthurai for Lunch around 3 PM.
Roads were in great shape till Anaiakarai. After that also it’s good but narrow and you cannot go fast.
