+1. this road is in decent condition all the way to Donigal

Monsoon is a big risk even in a SUV. There will be fallen trees all around. If the road is blocked, you will have to return all the way to Donigal to reach NH48.

I travelled on this road early last month from Subramanya. Initially I was very happy when I saw that the road was relaid. But my happiness ended just as I crossed the border into Hassan District. It kept on getting worse and worse, but then you will be traveling through one of the most beautiful evergreen forests in India. I was in a Scorpio and really it was a tiresome job negotiating the road.

Patchwork?? AFAIK, Bisle has not had any kind of patchwork done in the last few years. Atleast till last month, no patchwork of any kind was done.

I dont see this route stretch (Gundya-Kodlipet) neither in Google maps, MMI or Wikimapia.
Can you please help? Does one need to go via Sakleshpur?
As Samurai has already shown in the map, There is no direct route from Shanivarasante to Gundya. The only two possible routes are via Kodlipet-Shukravarasante-Donigal-NH48-Gundya and Shanivarasante-Palahalli-Vanagur Kuduraste-Bisle-Kulkunda (Subramanya)-Gundya

No need to go all the way to Sakleshpur.

Google maps has a lot of places missing. We cannot rely on it too much.

Abbey Falls itself is a small walk in a coffee estate. It will be late to reach Udupi (depending on the route you take).

You staying in Kudremukh or in Chikmagalur? If you stay at Sringeri, you can visit Kudremukh, Horanadu and reach Chikmagalur by evening.

This should be no problem, you can easily do in a day. In case you do need to stay over, why go back to Chikmagalur, stay over at Hassan and leave early in the morning. It saves at least an hour in your journey.

Re: Bangalore-Mysore-Dubare-Udupi-Jog-Kudremukh-Chikmagalur-Bangalore. Planned for Ju

Hi!

Have done this in 2 stages in 2006 & 2008.

Plan for covering average 40kms per hour actual running. (ur top speeds are immaterial as there are a lot of twisties.)

Also the scenery is mind-blowing. So there will be a lot of halts for photos.

NH 17 & 13 are in bad shape always. So you will encounter a lot of Volvo swallowing potholes. Take care not to scrape ur engine sump & suspensions.

Happy driving

The part you are describing was always in supreme condition, any season. Once you cross that forest gate, the nightmare being.

It was indeed patched up in December using red mud. I drove with family during Christmas and my wife commented that it wasn't half as bad as my earlier descriptions. In fact, it was in better shape than Shiradi in December. By now the mud must have been prised away by rain and traffic. Now Bisle has lot more traffic thanks to Sampaje close down.

Ashwin you need to factor heavy rains on the hills and aswell on the coast, this will slow you down considerably.

Filling mud into potholes cannot be termed as patchwork, can it? It just takes one rain to wash them off. When I did go there last month, all the mud on the road was washed off and whatever was left of the asphalt remained.

I don't know why the Dist administration/govt is neglecting this route. this is one of the most beautiful routes in the state.

I did take the Sampaje Ghat a couple of weeks back - took me about 4 hours Mangalore - Madikeri. But you never know how much you end up paying the cops ( I didn't any ) - it's a chance thing.

The Green Hotel, Mysore

c) If he is coming with Kids, a visit to Museaum of natural history - with huge Dinosauraus models - will be loved by Kids.

h) Since you will now will be staying in Madikeri, include Iruppu falls in itenarary.

i) Is your friend sea food lover? Make a halt at Shetty Lunch home at Kundapur for Kane fry and Chicken Ghee roast!!

j) Make him eat fried idlis and Gadbad ice cream at Diana hotel and Iconic Masale Dose and Goli bajji in Mitra Samaja restuarant in Udupi.

i) After Jog, it will be better to stay in Tirthahalli/Koppa which has good home stay options than Sringeri. Next day you can visit Sringeri, Horanadu and then reach CKM comfortably.

j) When you come from Jog, try and cross backwaters at Sagara to Sigandur in ferry - instead of driving down - to give your friend out of the world experience and drive down and stay in Tirthahalli.
THANK YOU! That really helped. I wanted tips on places to eat. And its a She , a friend from Mumbai. And she LOVES Prawns.

I might stay at Dasaprakash Paradise. Royal Orchid is bit expensive for the budget we have. Noted your suggestion on beach too thank you Sir

That makes it worth to try and drive on the route Abbey falls is optional. Once we visit Bylakuppe, we will start towards Dharmasthala and en route if we see any nice places we will stop for some time. Maybe we will halt at Dharmastala for the night and proceed to Udupi next morning. I am planning to stay at Greendale near Chikmagalur (read about them on TBHP) I guess its an hour away from Kemmangundi. Staying at Hassan is a good idea! Thank You Sir

Thank You everyone for the replies and routes. If any tips on places to eat and must eat items, would be helpful. We love food

You can check out for the mess or hotel for non veg at Mannagude at Pabbas. Don t miss Paradise for Non veg in Udupi, the best sea food i have tasted in my life. In case you are passing Surathkal than you can check out food in hotel Sadanand too. Of course Green Hotel is recommended for food at Mysore little expensive , or in case you love Biryani try RR in Mysore.

As a part of my trip, am looking to reach Madikeri from Maravanthe. Is Maravanthe-Mangalore-Sampaje Ghat-Madikeri the best ? I saw a route via Talacauvery-Panathur-Bekal. I'll be driving an i10.

I am not sure if Sampaje ghat road is opened yet. You need to confirm.
Else you need to go via Sakleshpur.
